Specifically can you remove the front driveshaft on a 4th gen 1500 4x4 with 8 speed trans and drive short term or long term? Any issues with throwing codes etc? My front ds is shot with no local resources to get another within a week or two. TIA.

I wouldn't think it would be an issue. Hopefully someone on here has done this.

I would think, yet cannot find anything anywhere on it, just replacement and complaints but no one mentions simply removing and leaving off.

You can remove everything ahead of the transfer case if you want, lol. My 4X4 hasn't had a front diff/axles or driveshaft for about 6 years and 40,000 miles now.As long as you unbolt the actuator off the front diff tie it up to the steering rack and leave it plugged in,you won't get any codes. So yes you can remove the front driveshaft and drive around, just leave the transfer case in 2 wheel drive mode. I'm old school and like running a big-n-little tire combination, plus my truck is a pavement princess that spends more time at the dragstrip then it does running around on the street, and dropping everything ahead of the transfer case saved roughly 120 lbs,and the truck picked up 2/10's at the track.

I've done it when I was diagnosing a front end vibration (wasn't the DS)....and then again, when I swaped in the 8HP70 for my 65RFE (waiting on bolts to arrive). In both cases; I was pretty slow to reinstall it as it was summer time and I did not need the 4x4 capability.

There is no issue to drive without the front driveshaft. No real benefit in driving without (weight), but no harm in doing so.

Thanks all, before I seen the responses I said f it and took her out for a test run on the highway. All is well. To be safe I took apart the ds tc end and slide it back on shaft to protect it.20220308_182802.jpg

My front driveshaft has been off for a few months now... But I'm a Gen2. No issues
