I just finished putting a cam in after discovering I had a few bad MDS lifters that we’re beginning to tear up the old cam. I went with a comp NSR stg 1. Surprisingly I didn’t have any bolts left over when I was done with assembly and the truck actually fired up. I gotta stop there and thank everyone on this forum for all the shared knowledge and wisdom. This site was a tremendous asset. So thanks to all.

So now my question. The cam instal pretty much wiped out my budget. Even with doing the labor myself, there were a lot of unanticipated purchases throughout the project. I know the cam requires a custom tune for the truck to run at peak performance. But will it hurt the engine to run for a couple days with a stock or canned Diablo tune. I don’t mind if it drives like crap for a couple days but I’d jump of a bridge if I did something stupid and ruined all the work I put in.

I would highly recommend do not drive your vehicle until you get an initial tune wrote on your vehicle, a Cam swap is a big change. I would also recommend getting a wide band gauge to monitor your AFR.

How do you get a tune ? I was thinking about the stage 1 but have no idea what to do after the install.

If it idles and drives ok, it doesn't absolutely need a tune, but I wouldn't go crazy at full throttle. You won't see the full benefits though without a tune.

Do you currently have a tuner? I'd probably call Hemifever and talk to him and see what he recommends and ask him about the cost of an initial custom tune.
