It's also a matter of volumetric efficiency. The remaining active cylinders get a larger air charge , hence more fuel and run with a higher dynamic compression ratio which is more efficient. The non active cylinders actually shutdown after combustion but before exhausting. This traps the spent charge in the cylinder acting like a damper that keeps ring seal and pressure on rod bearings in the proper direction.
Further adding to the system having problems down the road. You have a lot of little parts in the MDS lifters going through heat cycles. These heat cycles make the metal brittle and suspect after so many cycles. Combine this with a computer algorithm that is turning valves on and off in micro seconds, leads to a very complex system with minimal gains in the real world. Not to mention, you have an engine which is going to go out of balance with heat when in the MDS mode. There is no way that as the engine runs with the MDS activated that the thermal loads throughout the engine are equal.
Again, in the real world, most people on the forum, me included, have not experienced any significant gain with the MDS activated. I will take from the experience of others seeing little to no gain in miles per gallon combined with the complexity of the system and minimize my losses by keeping the MDS off. I will continue to run the recommended oil and filter and shorten my OCI and hope for the best. Only time will tell.

I found out how to save money and fuel....I stay home.Let the economy crash.Blame the ones responsible and go for the alternative. Then when things get better.Drive that hemi hard!!

^^^ ditto ^^^

Being retired I've been saving on fuel for over a year now.

But, if I want go somewhere I'm gonna go and enjoy the drive ... life can be short and it's unpredictable how long I'll last.

Oh, well. I cannot control what's going on in the world but I can enjoy what I have for now.

By the way, I keep MDS turned off and I ain't worried about how much fuel I save or use.

It may be a long time before things get better. Hope you don't die from old age while waiting.

Maybe not. One thing you do realize as you get older:
The good thing is the bad times never last. The bad thing about the good times is that they don't last either.
We live life the fullest and best we can and don't sweat the small stuff.

One of the best things to do is to stand a small quart sized container up in the box, then learn to drive so it doesn't tip over or slide around the box. It'll amaze you how much better the milege is,and how much longer your brakes will last once you learn to drive to keep the container upright and in the same place.

Or maybe a very hot cup of coffee between the legs as a cupholder?

Chrysler once said that MDS caused an irrelevant and very small amount to wear on the shutdown cylinders. And stated before I believe it's been accepted by the government more on the idea that there's four cylinders not polluting than it is about saving gasoline, since that is so minuscule. And one drop of pollution that doesn't go into the atmosphere of course would not be exactly a bad thing of course, and that really makes greenies celebrate
The point is that if MDS saves .5 mpg multiplied by a million + vehicles, it lowers their fleet mpg by 500,000 + mpg.

It could, but it would take a couple years to ramp up production enough to utilize it and with the current policies no oil companies are going to do that until it's actually finished. Thrice and then some bitten.

Keystone is already in business. It transports half a million barrels per day. Keystone is a tar sands pipe which doesn't efficiently (or cheaply) refine out into gasoline. TransCanada acknowledged the Keystone and Keystone XL (not the same pipe) don't produce cheaper gasoline for Americans. Probably worth mentioning that Keystone oil is still imported oil since Canada is not a state in the USA and TransCanada is a Canadian company.

Keystone XL was the extension that used eminent domain to allow a foreign, private company to seize American land from American citizens. TransCanada has also canceled the project entirely which private companies have the right to do.

Retired over 2 years here. Still enjoying my truck & life in general. As we get older we'll drive less. When that starts to happen as long as I have cable TV, beer, and by then throw in a box of depends and I won't have to leave my recliner.

Brandon cancelled it,his first day in office, not TransCanada. If Trump had been re-elected that pipeline would of been onboard this fall.TransCanada has backed out of the deal ,but the Alberta government is offering to finish it,if Brandon will allow it.
