I got the "upgraded" Pentastar in the Durango, and it's buttery smooth. I wonder if I should stick with 0W-20, or move up to 5W-30.
Our Jeep had 5W20 in it for the first two oil changes (free from dealer) and it sounded a little noisy when it was hot for a new engine, granted it was probably 5W20 dino oil of questionable quality being from the dealer and free. I figured if 5W20 dino oil was OK then PUP 5W30 would work just fine and flow better in the cold, so far it has and IMO quieter when the motor is hot. The last, maybe, 3 oil changes it has been getting 5 PUP 5W30 and 1 PUP 0W40 (mostly because I buy the 5W30 on sale and it comes in 5 liter jugs so I am not cracking a new jug for 1 liter) and seems to be good with this mix too.

Well, reading this, I'm actually tempted to run Red Line 0W-20, which has the same HTHS of 2.9 as most 5W-30 ILSAC lubes. I wonder if I would have trouble with the warranty, because otherwise, Red Line would fit the bill nicely.

I was tempted to go with M1 EP 0W-20, however, it drops viscosity like crazy even in MPI engines. I've seen a Jeep UOA (2018, V6) where it dropped to 7 cSt after 3000 miles. Heck, even PUP doesn't drop viscosity that fast. If I have to stick to 0W-20 for warranty, and it has to be API approved, then the only 0W-20 that I know of that stays in grade and performs really well under high heat is Castrol EDGE EP 0W-20, mostly because it's in fact their European EDGE 0W-20 C5 and it's MB229.71 approved, which is a though approval to get. One of the requirements of MB229.71 is for the oil to stay in grade over the life of the OCI, which it does beautifully. Otherwise, it's Red Line all day long.

This forum had it right, Red Line is good stuff. There are other good lubes as well, but Red Line is a good one-stop-shop for everything you want in a RAM/Jeep/Dodge.

So we are disappointed that redline is changing 0w30 right? But I had a thought, why are we disappointed at a formula change when we don't know what the result is yet? I guess we assume it will be less ticking killing then current version, but it is at least possible it still will kill those ticks for snow belt usa? To be continued....

Red Line leaving 5W-30 alone? I hope so, since the 0W's are targeted at the little SP engines. I planned to keep this Hemi for the long haul.

yes only new weights and 0w30 should be effected per dave. He was very honest about it. Maybe 0w30 would be the one formula where a guy can add lubegard. We will see, we need a voa/uoa to know more.

This was the oil pan from the LS1 engine out of my '98 Firebird Formula after 125K miles. I used Valvoline 5W-30 and did oil changes at regular 5000 mile intervals. I was shocked at the varnish/ soot coating on the inside of the oil pan.
I have 52K miles on my 2500 Ram HD with the 6.4L and I'm pretty sure I don't want to use Valvoline in this engine. I've been using 0W-40 PUP but it is very hard to find in any auto parts stores in the areas I travel in. I'd seriously consider Redline 5W-30 but I'm finding it is as rare as 0W-40 PUP. What to do?

Was that regular old non synthetic Valvoline in the white bottle? I did the oil pump pickup tube o ring in white GMC a few months back at 203K miles and the pan looked considerably cleaner than that and lord knows What brands of oil and oil change intervals it had throughout its life.

Lubegard turns any oil into a higher moly oil, bgmoa turns any oil into a high detergency oil. Lubegard biotech also boosts deteregency, just a little less then bgmoa. Meaning either product will turn an average oil into the next level using only additives that are in engine oil, just more of them. If you find a random 0w40 and want to make it better to address that condition. Mind you we don't know what was wrong with that vehicle, that is pretty bad.

That was Valvoline synthetic 5W-30 in the silver/ gray bottle. Not conventional. I bought that car new in '98 and serviced it myself throughout the 22 years of ownership. I swapped out the LS1 for a factory LS6 as one of my retirement projects.

^^^ If you are in the US and I believe you are just order Redline and it ships for free. There is a seller on here I believe that has good deals on it but I can't remember his name right now. I am sure others will chime in with it.

You should be able to buy the PUP 0W40 online and ship it for free too if you would rather stick with that.

EliteRaceFab.com - that's where I order Red Line from.

Just ordered 5 quarts of 75W-85 and 5 quarts of ATF C+ to do the Durango and my wife's Jeep. Funny enough, Dodge specifies ATF+ 4 now for the MP2010 transfer case. It's okay though, I also got two quarts of ATF D4 @ home if need be. Mr. David Granquist said that there is no reason to go thicker with the gear oil as it won't benefit me.

I but oil at summit racing , they ship free over 100. and that is not hard to get to with 10 quarts of oil and a couple filters. There prices are less than any where on some oils , check the specials.

However, I just got a blow up deal of Pennzoil ultra platinum at amazon ( i dont buy **** at amazon unless i really have to ) But they had the 5w-20 at 21 bucks for the 5 qt. I thought that was insane. So i stocked up for two oil changes, I had just changed my oil from summit when I saw the deal. However, checked back two days later at amazon, and its sold out, and 5w-30 is not available until May 10. The the 5w-20 just ssems plain unavailable now. I did get some regular platinum as well for my other car for 20 bucks again. You really cant beat 20 bucks for 5 qrts of full synthetic. That is like 2000 prices on oil.
