That’s great and its about time. Be nice if they could squeeze 25 mpg out of it without babying the drive.

But….

Never buy the first model year of something new. Let someone else be the guinea pig. You’re rolling the dice on a poker game with marked chips….

They're is supposed to be a plug in hybrid of the I-6 that will have more total HP than the HO version.

Looks like the intercooler will be prone to heat-soak and looks super easy to work on! :boxed:

Not sure I'd use the word "arrived" since I can't buy one and no one has tested it anywhere yet.

This engine has been rumored for years and though its obviously coming, I'd be surprised if the hemi is not available in some trim/option/package for another few years yet anyway.

The key is going to be fuel economy. If it can't increase that by an obvious and significant amount over the hemi then there is no point to this engine to me as a consumer I'm just going to pass on this engine (obviously Ram needs the engine because it will help them with emissions but that doesn't affect my purchasing decisions in the slightest.)

In other words; this engine is great for Ram, but not necessarily great for me as a consumer. We will see, I will consider one if they get it right with no turbo lag and a obvious improvement with MPG (and not just tricking EPA tests either, real world results!)

Damn oil filter looks to be in the same awesome spot. LOL!!
The oil filter placement caught my eye too, but it looks like it's mounted more towards the rear to me. It's mounted more towards the front on the Hemi.

I'd like to see it without the plastic engine cover on to see if all 6 coils and plugs are accessible. May not be the case with that intercooler plumbing reaching over the top of the engine. Not a huge deal as the pentastar needs the intake removed for one bank of coils/plugs.

I'd also like to know how the DI is setup. Dual injection or just DI? Just DI = the need for eventual cleaning of the backs of the intake valves $$$.

Like said, fuel economy is the kicker. I'd bet it doesn't do a drop better than the Pentastar, which at best, is maybe ~12% better fuel economy than the hemi in a Ram 1500 application.

Everytime I look at a modern engine I reflect back on my first car. ‘55 Chevy with a 265 V8. Could have fit that engine in twice and I could sit on the radiator or wells to work on it. Plugs, point and condenser anyone ? :)

This article from Road & Track says this engine will be direct injection. That makes this a hard pass for me. I could live with dual injection, but my Audi has given me all the direct injection experience I'll ever want.

My wife's Mazda DI has been flawless in 85,000 miles and 10 years. The key is designing the motor to keep the valves clean, I thought some (maybe Toyota?) were adding a single fuel injector upstream to spray fuel at certain times to keep the valves clean.
Mazda claims that they do theirs by temperature.

I haven't needed to manually clean the valves yet on mine, but I have run some combustion cleaner through the throttle body intermittently. What it really needs is a sustained high speed trip, but I think my wife revs it often on the way to work lol.

I do the same but after a minute of reflecting I am glad for modern vehicles and will aways take new over old..and my first car was older than most..

Color me excited!

Some of my favorite, and arguably the best, motors made were I6.

I hope they knock it out of the park. Would welcome the move from this archaic and miserably inefficient 6.4 HEMI.

I agree. I had an'81 BMW 733i with a rare 5 speed for several years. It was a great motor with lots of torque and speed even in a big car like the 7 series.

I know the direct injected VQ35DD in our 2019 Nissan Pathfinder turns the engine oil disturbingly black in 3000 miles, where the earlier port injected VQ35DE engines I've owned would not do this. There's lots of reports out there of severely sludged up VQ35DD's because owners stretched oil changes a bit too far. Many of them sludged beyond repair around 40K miles as well.

Thing is, to be turbo charged today, they're all going to be DI for fuel management and emissions. No other way around it. Dual injection to keep the backs of the intake valves clean just adds more cost and complexity.

It will be interesting to see how they roll this engine out and in what trim levels. I bet the hemi will live on for some years yet, as will the pentastar.

A good buddy of mine who grew up working on 50s, 60s and 70s vehicles told me: "They don't build cars the way they used to, and thank goodness they don't"
Before if you got 100K out of an engine it was a big milestone, nowadays 100K is when you change the spark plugs(if you have them) the first time.

I wonder if they’ll offer it in the Power Wagon. I imagine it would be good for hauling/towing, sounds like a broad torque curve, hopefully better fuel mileage unloaded. I love I6 engines so I’m hoping this one is a home run.
