Its the actuator/mechanism that changes the tranny from high range to low range. Dealer says it shorted out internally.

Its raining and cold. So the Cuda and motorcycles are still hibernating. :(

I have good news for you! This happen to me in my 2012 Ram 1500. I thought I was in for a huge bill . Turns out this is a safety issue where the truck puts you in this setting because the rear differential filters need service. There were a couple filters etc inside the differential that triggered the code, the shop serviced for me and i was out the door for $800. Make sure they service all of the filters while they're in there. Not just the one that through the code.

The what? Rear differential filter? Can you elaborate as I don’t know what you’re talking about.

I agree, I’ve never heard of rear differential filters. I just changed the fluid in a’14 and ‘15 and I didn’t see such. I’ve even had the bed completely off of the ‘15 and the owners manual says nothing about such either. Tell me what pumps the fluid.

Can't they just pull the actuator and manually put it into hi?

I haven't looked at the actuator on my Ram, but on my Dakota, it could be pulled and the shifting mechanism just manually moved. If it can be done the same way, just do that and leave it electrically unplugged.

Say what? Rear diff filter? Huh, never heard of such a thing, esp multiple ones that would need to be wired up to throw a code. Did this dealer also put summer air in your tires and top off the blinker fluid?

Please come back here and quantify this statement. Guessing you misspoke, which we all do sometimes.

The quantity was $800, for differential filters. I'm happy to help but don't understand what your asking for.

Oh, I'm sorry I just read more of the thread. Apparently, there's a sensor and a couple of filters inside the rear differential. They just needed servicing.

OK, I owe everyone apology. I picked my new truck up yesterday and while driving home was playing with the transmission. The entire time I was replying to this thread, I was referring to my transmission having the filter packs. Instead of writing transmission, I had brain fade and kept writing differential. No wonder it didn't make sense, apologies to all!

Lol. no, I don't go to the dealer unless I have to. @IDSandman Don't be an *ss either
How am I being an ass? Bu asking you to elaborate on this? I can be an ass, hear I’m pretty good at it so you will know when I am…..
I’m truly curious as to where these filters and sensors for them are? Nothing mentioned in a schematic for them on my ‘18 ram. Asked my buddy who is a ASE master mechanic and he never heard of them either. Maybe I’m missing something and want to learn, why I joined this place.

I pulled a few differential covers off, replaced bearings, swapped gears and even drilled and tapped a differential to add a pump and cooler to a rear end have never seen a filter in one.
And the only sensors I ever heard of were some of the early ABS sensors in the rears.

I said, “quantify” not quantity. Completely different meanings. What are the part numbers for these “filters”? What was the code that was thrown? Where is this sensor located? All that will be on your receipt. Of there are filters in there I would like to change them. It’s weird though as I can’t find any rear diff filter on line or at my local napa.
Please help us out here BD cooper.
