I just pulled my camper on a 1500 mile vacation with my 2022 e-torque 5.7. I experimented a good bit with different fuel ratings and fuelly... I saw absolutely no difference in MPG between 87 and 89 octane.

Higher Octane 10% ethanol or less fuel prevents Hemi tick
If you always buy 91 or Higher octane from a reputable service (GAS) station
and change your oil regularly..
that’s the cure for your Hemi tick

If you get stuck with watered down gas (just ask Gr8bawana) you may have different out come.

If you already have Hemi tick it probably wouldn’t help.

I'll put my 2 cents in...

I have about 7k miles on a 2022 1500 5.7L.

I was putting 87 in it, but wanted to see if 89 was much better on the mileage. There is no ping either way, and I mostly drive easy FL high miles. I seem to get about 10% more in mileage. So from about 15 or 16 to about 17 or 18.

So I look at the price. If the 89 is within 10% of the 87, I'll get 89. If it's more the 10% I'll get the 87. Keep in mind, the tank is never empty so the fuel is somewhere between 87 and 89.

It's interesting you're seeing that kind of difference. When I tested that I didn't really see any significant difference in fuel economy. My drive isn't flat like yours. It's pretty hilly where I live. I'd definitely go with 89 if I saw a 10% increase in fuel economy. Maybe I should run that test again now that I have more miles on my truck.

Keep in mind, I only have 7k miles on it. So my increase may have been normal with a little break in, coinciding with the 89 gas. But, I did see 1.5 to 2 mpg increase with 89 vs 87 gas. I haven't gone down to 87 in about 2 or 3 fill ups. The increase in gas prices has reduced the gap, percent wise, between 87 and 89, so I've been going with 89.

My truck only has 8k miles on it, so not much difference there. I was initially testing this before I had 4k miles on the truck. And I tested the 89 octane first, so the lower miles on a new engine could have skewed my numbers. You've just helped me talk myself into testing this again. Thanks! :waytogo:

Not sure if this was mentioned already, but towing a 4000 lbs travel trailer it doesn’t matter.

One more thing to add. Mine is 4x4 with 3.92 gearing. Not sure if that matters with the 87 vs 89. Maybe there is more advantage to the 89 paired with the 3.92. As they always say... "your results may vary". For me, it's 89 for now unless the prices increase to more than a 10% difference.

Hey, you and I are in the same town! Mine is also a 4x4 with 3.92, I did notice a little bump in MPG around the 3000 mile mark. Now I have about 4500 on it.

When I was working I had several 5.7 & 3 6.4L. They came with free gas. You could not put premium in unless it was specified and the Company gas pumps had no mid-grade. Never saw a difference running regular with 10% ethanol. The ECU takes care of the pinging. Having said that, on my last Company truck (87 for the 1st 26K miles), which I bought, I always run mid-grade or premium at Costco (no mid-grade at Costco). Why, no explanation other than I'm a bit old school. My truck is used almost 100% for towing or with the truck camper so I really don't put much DD use on it. I tried to get a HP figure out of the Powertrain Engineer's (87 vs. 89) but was never able to get an answer I could share here. I wish all gas was Premium and then each OEM could design to that.

I used 89 just cuz it's 'recommended', now it's tuned for 89 so I'm stuck with it.
I have never seen a difference in mpg with hand calculating several tanks of the different grades.

New vehicles do not make a noticeable knock. The computer changes the timing. So you will never notice it. I run 89 in mine. The manual says 89. But 87 is ok but for perfect engine performance 89 is the way to go
Funny thing about different grades. It is the alcohol they are using to improve the grade.

I was traveling with some friends on a camping trip and while we were getting gas I watched a tanker drop his fuel at that station. I then notice he never put any gas that would indicate different grades. I went over and talked to him. Asked if was dropping only regular.

He started telling me something I suspected. That it only takes one tank at a station. At the blending facility they put the same amount of ethanol in all grades. Depending on the the company they will also add detergents and such but they don't change the grade. From then on we just bought regular.

Kinda glad I only have two gas engines and that's on a tractor.

Diesel is my thing.

I tow often in the mountains of Colorado. 8800# trailer and the truck loaded pretty heavy. I have tested different octanes and can tell any difference in power or mileage. Our regular is only 85.

I worked at a gas station. We had three in-ground tanks, two for regular 87 and one for premium 91. Midgrade was a mix, pumped from both tanks.
Our delivery tankers were split: they carried regular grade in one side and premium in the other, and each tank had its own hose.

What does fuel octane have to do with hemi tick? Hemi tick is not combustion-related - it is valve lifter roller sticking.
its nearly the weekend and I can’t bear the insanity that these forums suggest, for gods sake the humanity !!!!!!

oh Hemiman you got me good.. so hard to tell if you’re joking or not …. please oh no it hurts please stop !!

YUP, I ran a HESS gas station when was a teenager. That was when unleaded really started to come in with them absolutely rotten egg cats and such. Yup, 2 tanks that mix. Sometimes I do wonder if the tanker operator dropped the correct fuel in a tank. ALL we ever did was have the driver stick the truck and I would stick the tanks and also have a water chemical checker on the end of the stick so I knew when to call in for tank MX.

Yep, there's no way to possibly know if you're really getting the gas type you're paying for. It's the honor system. I even had to laugh while I was typing that! (Honor.......Today?) Part of the reason I don't argue when people don't see a big difference between 87 and 89 octane.
