This is my first post so I apologize if I'm doing something incorrect with this post. For context I drive a 5.7 2022 1500 big horn.

Has anyone here done any exhaust work to their hemi? I recently got this truck and am loving it, but am extremely underwhelmed with the exhaust noise. I want to mess around with the exhaust, but am not really sure what road to go down. I have no real budget, but would prefer to stay away from full exhaust systems (borla for example). I was looking at doing a muffler swap with the flowmaster 40 series, but to me it doesn't seem to make much of a difference to the noise. The super 10, and the magnaflow magnapack seem to sound good as well, however I heard the only way to get a real change is by doing a res delete, but that would cause a significant amount of drone, especially with mds. If anyone here has any experience with doing exhaust mods to their 5.7, or has a personal opinion they want to chime in, feel free. Thank you all.

No I don't think anyone has ever done any modifications to their exhaust here....lol but seriously if all you're looking for is a sound change then I would just swap the muffler to something else, depending on the muffler itself it will make a huge difference in the sound.

Just think of it logically, look at the size or the stock muffler and then look at some of the aftermarket ones, it's the biggest change you'll make in the exhaust from the cat back visually and audibly. When I did exhausts on my rams I always went with a cherry bomb extreme muffler, didn't touch anything else and they sounded great. I would certainly listen to as many videos you can find with different mufflers and start with just swapping that out. You can always remove the resonators after the fact if you want to. And getting a cat back system is a huge waste of money IMO, replacing brand new pipe with other brand new pipe where the muffler is the only or biggest difference, I just don't understand spending all that extra money when it yields no extra result and just wastes the rest of the stock exhaust.

I would have to disagree on replacing the system with a cat back, on the previous 4th gen Ram it made sense to just change out the muffler because it was something that could be done without cutting. On the 5th gen Ram the exhaust is one piece from the mid pipe back. The aftermarket replacement mufflers are clamped to the pipe bend and I really do not see a good seal happening in that area without leaking, just my 2 cents.

Haha fair point. Have you done anything to your current ram? I guess a better way to word my question was if anyone had done a muffler swap and if they would recommend it, and how much doing a resonator delete would affect the inside drone with mds.
Thank you for the input on the catback however, I had planned to stay away from a full system but i agree with what youre saying.

I'm strictly speaking from experience and from a financial standpoint. I've done exhausts on every vehicle I have ever owned prior to these last 2 and have always just had a local shop cut out the old and weld in the new, never had any issues on my rams with exhaust leaks (well other than the manifold bolts on my 2011 but that's unrelated). The elements are pretty rough on things up here in the northeast, if it's fine up here I'm guessing it would be fine down south too. Of course, providing a good shop do the work but that's stating the obvious.

My original point was more on cost, for example I would do the cherry bomb extreme muffler for $50 (not sure what current cost is) and pay around $100-150 for install and be done for under $200. The upfront cost on a cat back system alone is going to be much more than that, let alone if you pay for install as well. With the cut and weld, you can throw in some nice 5" tips and still come out at less than half of what most cat backs cost just for the kit.

Oh gotcha, yeah sorry I may have read your original post a little wrong. This ram I haven't really touched at all (pretty much my first time ever not modifying a vehicle), my previous ram (2017) had a magnaflow muffler on it from the original owner that I kept on for the duration of my ownership. And for my first 2 rams (2011/13) I did the cherry bomb extreme muffler swaps. All three rams that have had the exhausts have been the 5.7 and all had the resonators left on, and I didn't have any excessive (or much at all) drone in any of them. Also important to mention I also always disabled MDS because it's evident when it kicks in even with stock exhaust to me, and it was very clear when it would go into MDS with aftermarket setups. Oh and one more thing to keep in mind which I can't personally speak to since I haven't done an exhaust on my current truck, but these 5th gens with ANC can effect how much you hear in cab vs outside, just something to keep in mind.

Never ran one without the resonators so I can't speak to that experience, but I liked the cherry bomb extremes so much that I put them in my car also:

Here's a link to a video I took of my 2011 with the cherry bomb installed just to give you an idea of what the muffler swap w/resonator can sound like:

And for contrast, here's what 2 sound like on the old car which of course also is lacking cats and resonators!

That cherry bomb actually sounds pretty sick, thats the level of noise I'm trying to aim for, although mufflers such as the 40 series and super 40 seem to underperform on the 5th gen rams imo. And the ANC is pretty cool although I won't know how efficient it is until I really start messing with the exhaust. What magnaflow muffler was on the 2017? Magnapack?

Thanks! I was always very happy with the way they sounded, nice and clean on the come down from high rpm as well. I've never liked crackling or that kind of noise in that scenario, these provided a nice clean and aggressive sound. The 66 that I have originally had glasspacks on it, I switched them to flowmaster 40 series for a while and was very underwhelmed by their sound. Like many people, based on their name/reputation I expected more but was disappointed, and some of their louder more aggressive mufflers have the annoying crack/popping sound that I dislike. Just personal preference in regards to that.

I know you can disconnect the ANC, so whatever exhaust choice you make you can always experiment with disconnecting it to see how much of a difference it is making. As for the magnaflow muffler I'm not sure, I never looked into it more than verifying the brand while under the truck. I kept it because it did have the same clean sound that I enjoyed, although less aggressive (bigger in size as well) than the cherry bomb extreme. At that point though I was ready for that and partially why I'm leaving the 21 stock.

If I didn't live in hell for exposed moving car parts, I would just put a electric cutout in and call it a day. Have it quiet as stock when you want, and super loud and aggressive whenever you want as well. Have had them on my car for over a decade but that gets stored all winter and never sees salt. For that car it takes it from loud to very loud, but basically I can drive around town fine with the cherry bombs or set car alarms off with the cutouts open.

i have the magna flow muffler delete, kept the resonators on. its loud and i like it, but it has no stealth mode.. it does however sound like a subaru when it drops down to 4cyl. i just turn MDS off until i get on the highway..

First thing I do is replace the muffler.
I put a Flowmaster Outlaw on my 2019 Laramie which only required 1 cut to remove the giant steel drum of a muffler.
The new one bolted right up easy peasy and sounded awesome even keeping the dual factory resonators.( or maybe because of them)
If I had to do it again I'd try the Solo delete from Nick.

My PW on the other hand I had replaced from the flange back cause I wanted to get rid of the fugly resonator too.
It has a 12" glasspack and a 4" stainless resonated tip.
Sounds better than the Laramie did even as a single exhaust.
I hit a deer pulling out of my driveway 3 days after getting my PW cause it was so stupid quiet.
Now they can hear me coming and get out of my way.
Throttle response is awesome too...

I did a muffler delete. Replaced with a straight pipe and kept the resonators. Really happy with the sound. No loud droning while at highway speeds and a nice growl. 5.7 with the eTorque.

We need a sticky with videos of people's exhaust setup. I would like to do a muffler swap with something that isn't much louder, but makes a deeper rumble.

Look at a Magnaflow.

I am like you, I had a 2020 and thought the exhaust note was decent for being stock but my 2022 was really tame. I didn't want it to loud so I put a Flowmaster Super 40. Sounds fantastic and not over the top until you give it the beans

Exhaust drone is subjective. What is annoying to one person, another person might say "what drone?". I've gone the route of replacing the mufflers on three different 5th gens, keeping the stock resonators. All three were from B2 Fabrication. Two were their oval muffler, or moderate version. One was the round muffler, or aggressive version. They all sounded great at startup, and when cruising in town, but I heard droning from all three at highway speed. The wife said she hardly noticed it, and her truck is the one with the more aggressive muffler. As long as she's happy with it I'm happy too. I haven't done anything with the exhaust on my truck, but I'm leaning towards a full cat-back system when I finally do. In researching this, a well designed cat-back seems to produced the least amount of droning.

A good quality cat back, that removes the resonators, makes a great sound for these trucks. However, headers and aftermarket cat back exhaust really brings the truck to life. A noticeable difference in sound and acceleration

I have the Gibson "Super Truck" cat-back and Gibson headers myself and love the sound.
keep in mind, this is just one part of the total configuration for the quest for more power.

I'm not exactly sure what the "drone" is. The only thing I have done to the exhaust system is replace the tips with 5" tips.

Drone is interior resonance inside the cab, it can be very annoying.
