Hey y'all, what coolant drain did I miss?

I've been learning to work on my 2010 1500 5.7L and finally got around to flushing the coolant a couple days ago. I found only the drains for the radiator and block on the passenger side - what did I miss?

Since I got only 2-2.5 gallons out, this became a partial coolant change instead of a flush (all factory spec so no worries about mixing coolants).

I tried the Chilton manual but it wasn't helpful and I couldn't find anything on youtube either.

Thanks in advance for your help! And please feel free to direct me to another thread if it already exists.

Partial flush is all that is possible w/o pain, the drivers side is near impossible. You used hoat and not oat yes? You could do heater core down to thermo stat, but a couple flushes just as easy. I usually do 3 partial flushes, it is what it is.

I don't personally, but a lot of guys do. Since 100 percent isnt realistic, I do it as easy as possible usually over a three week period. Flush drive a bit turn on heater, flush, you get the idea. I have a pic up somewhere, this method does make the coolant much cleaner with every flush. The drivers side bolt makes this job zero fun, but it is worse for me, the passenger bolt on mine is wedged in there, so I cant even get that off. and if I did it would likely be stripped. I use the top block nut and just do radiator.

The far left is fresh coolant, the third was even closer, dont have a pic. Does not make it all the way back to fresh though. right was first flush, middle was second, missing the third. I hate doing this way, but better then alternatives. I might opt for a system flush by a shop next time, dunno.

How do you dispose of coolant?

local dump takes everything from paint to coolant to oil...

recycles all of it, they make some funny paint colors that is used on various projects.

What is your stuff, Burla? Being a 2010, it proly has HOAT? Orange HOAT?

Anyway, how many miles / years you have on that stuff? I'm surprised it's that rusty. Now I might rinse.

hoat, more of age then miles. I was ten years in on 5 year coolant, lol. 30-k

I recall a few years ago back on the farm a few trucks went 12 years ( approx. 100K miles) before they got anti freeze changed out and they saw many a night of sub zero (up to -36) temps in the Midwest winters...

The new lifetime coolants dont have additives, just coolant base. I think they still can degrade. I wouldnt trust anything for "life".

Sure? Water pump lube, defoamer, rust inhibitor? And for diesels, cylinder liner wetting agent.

I'm sure, the additives are used because it takes time for the film to populate, so the additives give protection until the base achieves its film. Lifetime fluids cant be used on factory fill because of this, no protection for many months until a film is made. It is also why they work so good as secondary fills, no additives for compatibility issues and no additives to wear out, just good ol coolant base. The msds is posted in the coolant thread for all the coolants we deal with.

all you need to know about coolant...

peak global life..

Denatonium benzoate (de-an-TOE-nee-um BEN-zoh-ate) is generally regarded as having the most bitter taste of any compound known to science.

coolant base and bitterant so people dont drink it, that's it.

I just received 4 gallons of Mopar OAT coolant for my spring change out. Noted the bittering additive on the jug. First time.
No dead kitties anymore.

Quassin is a white, bitter, crystalline substance that is the prototypical example of the family of quassinoids. It can be extracted from the quassia tree, from which it gets its name. It was first isolated in 1937 and its chemical structure was elucidated in 1961. It is one of the most bitter substances found in nature, with a bitter threshold of 0.08 ppm and it is 50 times more bitter than quinine.[1]

Denatonium, usually available as denatonium benzoate and as denatonium saccharide, is the most bitter chemical compound known, with bitterness thresholds of 0.05 ppm for the benzoate and 0.01 ppm for the saccharide. It was discovered in 1958 during research on local anesthetics by MacFarlan Smith of Edinburgh, Scotland, and registered under the trademark Bitrex.

I use Quassia bark tea, when hunting to get rid of ticks on contact.

Interesting thing maybe the 10 year mopar oat is the one coolant that doesnt have additives, similar to peak global life. Both msds are in those threads. The mopar 5 year has additives. I am starting to think the 10 year might be compatible with the 5 year. For sure pgl and mopar 10 year are compatible, looks almost identical. However, that would mess up the color, which is part of the performance, being able to tell when to change by color.

I have had luck on other cars with pulling T-Stat and lower rad hose and flushing block with hose. And yes I have pulled all the dex cool out of a 4.3L before until the white bucket had nearly clear water (bucket walls not perfectly white so it tend to have a little haze) and then change it over to Prestone............. I hate these "Can't combine" coolants.........

PS, in an emergency, as in no one in the area takes it and only if you are on town sewer (not septic and leach field) I have sent it to the waste water treatment plant in town via pipe lines (i.e. toilet!!!)

Safer then dumping it in the woods like the old days..........
