The problem one runs into with the 2" hitch is that most 'off the shelf' receivers and balls that fit them are rated at 5K or 6K lbs. So while the rig may be capable of more weight, the attaching hardware is not. Be careful of your combinations (...read the fine print stamped on the part you are installing).
Good point. Be sure the insert and ball are rated to at least what you are looking to tow. I bought an insert/ball combo with a 20,000lb rating so I know I'll never overload it

Like stated in this tread, a 20K receiver is not worth a hill of beans with a 6K ball. I have a Insert/ball combo rated at 15K. Nothing I pull will be close to that so never have worries.

That's what I thought, too. However, the dealer showed me the RAM HEMI truck & it has Class 4 (with 2 inch) ... I guess the dealer switched it out for the less expensive Class 4 (if it came from Dodge with the Class 5)
The 2.5 inch receiver is standard on all HD trucks. No way a dealer just went and switched it out for a smaller receiver…

You would think that with 4 or 5 Dodge dealerships within 35 miles of each other in San Diego, that the sales staff would be well read on what is available from the Assembly Plants & Body Vendors

Agreed. They would never do that.

It was probably a half ton truck. Those come with 2” receivers.

No. I could see a dealership doing this.

An even more unknowing customer comes in and pitches a fit. I need a 2 inch reciever. The dealership says...you need the 2.5 inch reciever for the capacities of the truck.

But I only have a 2 inch mount...i need the 2 inch receiver. Says the customer....but sir they offer a reducer with every new truck.

Dammit do what I say or I am not buying.

And then the next guy gets screwed.

People are special these days.

My 2006 2500 4x4 diesel came with a class 4 2.25" hitch
Not gonna say it didn't...but...Dodge used a 2 inch on all trucks til 2013 when they went to a 2.5 inch on HD trucks.

2.25 would be the outside measurement of a 2 inch hitch.

Have never not once seen a 2.25 inch ball mount.

Interesting.
