Looking at purchasing a used 2021 Rebel. It looks like one of the running boards is damaged and when I looked underneath, the bracket is pulling away from the undercarriage area (See photo). Is this something that can be reasonably repaired? The rest of the truck checks out ok.

I'd pass. If it took that big of a hit what else could be wrong? Why is somebody selling a 2021 so quick?

Do not buy. Either get a new 2021 or new 2022.

How do you come up with this nugget of wisdom and pearl of advice. You have absolutely zero idea what the purchase price of the truck is. If you can save enough money there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a used truck, especially when it only has 13,000 miles on it.

Those brackets can quite easily be bent and ripped, even at fairly low speed. Neither the bracket nor the rocker panel are all that robust. I would never mount sliders to anywhere but the frame.

Yep, drive off or onto of a high curb, you could easily do that much damage

When a dealer buys a vehicle to flip
You don't think they would put it on a rack to check brakes, change oil & filter, etc.
Then check for damage, like hanging exhaust.
They would not be in business for long if they didn't check the brakes before the sale, everyone is sue happy & bad brakes from a dealer would make them liable

Knowing todays prices of trucks you are better off to buy new when the used vehicle is in excellent condition. Especially when it’s less than a year old, now a damaged 2021 I wouldn’t even look at.

Based on the mileage and warranty still in effect. Id get it done at an authorized body shop. This is frame that has ripped. I agree it could be repaired, (you can see the welds are very strong ) It would have to be welded and I agree it needs to be scab plated as well. But with a tear this big, Id make sure that the frame is straight. This is structural part of the vehicle. Use it as a bargaining chip. It is not a trivial weld. It is a structural weld.
For any half decent welder that's an easy fix.

There’s a very small amount of damage to the actual step itself (cracks in the plastic). I don’t know this for sure, but I’m starting to wonder someone at the dealer took if for a joy ride and something happened. Only speculation though. I just don’t see them taking in a vehicle and not addressing this after an inspection. I’m having someone who owns a body shop come up with me to look at it. After getting good recommendations through this thread, I’ll be more comfortable if someone not affiliated with the dealer looks it over.
So what did your buddy have to say in terms of cost to fix this right and did the rest of the truck check out when he looked at it.

It’s going to be between $300-$500 to fix correctly. His welder looked at it as well just to make sure. The rest of the vehicle checked out. I know there are always risks when buying a used vehicle, but I feel ok about moving forward with this one as the dealer has also agreed to drop the price due to the repair. I’ve been looking at other Rebel’s and this one just checks off more of my “want” boxes, even with this repair.

That is actually quite a bit less than I would have expected. You have checked this thing out very closely and it has the options you want, I would not be afraid to move forward with it either. Due diligence gives a guy a lot of confidence and you still have bumper to bumper warranty, and are within the window to buy Mopar extended bumper to bumper from a Ram dealer or Zeiglers, so how much could possibly go wrong. Let us know how much you like the truck once you have been driving it for a bit.

Not bad at all, some people go all out on repairs and would want it finished coated to match the outside paint (even thought it really doesn't from the factory).
It didn't look bad to me, I would just reinforce it if using the running boards again as I weigh more than I should :(

I would ask to get a full out body shop quote on the repair, and then see if dealer will take that amount off the truck. I understand your buddy can do the work for under $500 but what's his warranty on the body work like?? And are you going to hold him to it and lose a buddy?

All good points. The quote provided is from a reputable body shop that includes a warranty. He’s not just a kid working out of his garage. The dealer was also willing to drop the price well over the repair costs to a point that I’m comfortable with. As far as losing a buddy… if he messes it up, he’s gone!!! (Only kidding)
