One of the quickest cars in my old high school was a little 70 Dart Swingerr with a healthy 340/4 speed and a set of 5.13's in the rear. It was only good to 110 mph,but it'd get there in about a block, lol. The prettiest car was a 72 340/4 speed B5 Blue Cuda though

Amen Brother! Back then a girl that I worked with had a 1969 Dart Swingerr with a 340/4 speed, headers and gears (not sure what ratio). I got to take the car for a ride...good God what a quick little car!

Currently overseas and my wife sends me a video of her 2016 Ram 5.7 with only 52,000 miles on it and it's making a racket. She said she was driving home and suddenly heard a loud tick sound and the truck lost a little power. She drove it the additional 5 miles to the house and parked it. Never had a lifter tick before. Mobil one 5-30 and the same Mopar factory filters and Mobil 1 filters I use on my Scat Pack Challenger. I have changed the oil and filter regularly in the truck 12 times. I'm obsessive and keep great records. I even changed it once because I was bored! No mods. It's my wife's truck and she drives like a normal human being. I can only figure defective part . its about 3 months out of warranty. I guess I'll tear into it when I get home in 30 days. I know it's a tired subject but I think mine is a little different in that it was driven only 52,000 miles. I'd enjoy hear everyone's thoughts on a 52,000 mile truck that wiped a lifter. Have you seen a low mileage truck wipe one out like this before?

So I'm back listened to it close and concluded it to be tapping on the Drivers side cylinder #1. Today I finally got time to tear into it. Removed the left valve cover and immediately observed excessive lash on #1 intake rocker as compared to all the others having essentially zero lash. Pulled the head and lifters and this is what we have. Cylinder #1 Intake lifter seems to have experienced an internal failure. As the truck was not run for more than 10-15 minutes after the tapping began, there was no damage to the cam whatsoever. Everything looks great. I am going to be replacing the failed lifter and continuing on.

Great quick catch......low pressure/lack of oil or bad needle bearings theories go out the window on this find.
Wouldn't take long to eat away at roller & cam with a collapsed lifter.

How does this explain heavily additized lubricants and low restriction oil filters eliminating lifter ticking in 80% of cases. Are you suggesting there are multiple failure modes in Hemi valve train design?

Looks to me like he proved his case as a internal lifter failure.....not the lifter roller/cam.
Picture worth a 1000 words.....LoL

Think about it this way.......lifter/lifters collapse.....they keep driving with ticking noise.....destroys roller & or cam so oil/pressure has nothing to do with it.
They see roller is damaged & thinking maybe it caused the internal lifter failure.
This is assuming of course dirty oil not restricting lifter orifice.

^^^Nice that you caught it early before it ate up the cam.

Are you just replacing the one failed lifter then?
I reconsidered my original plan to replace just the one and decided to replace all eight on the left side with Mopar lifters 5038785AD. Replacing the pushrods with Competition Cams 7914-16's. I'm replacing the exhaust manifold bolts on that side as well as replacing the plugs all around. Interesting to note my manifold bolts were like new and my factory plugs were NGK Iridium's; I was expecting Mopar.

Hmmmm The Comp Cams 7914's are significantly shorter than stock. I'll stay with my straight stock ones. I have also provided some endoscope photos of the cam lobes to reflect no discernable damage or odd appearance difference between #1 Intake and exhaust #3 , #5 and #7

Got it all back together. New oem NGK Iridium spark plugs all round. Fired right up. After everything settled down, no tick. However, I can tell #1 is still missing and it still throws P0301.
Swapped coil packs , still P0301
Swapped Fuel injectors , still P0301

What's the possibility that the MDS solenoid for #1 is bad and failed in such a way to only throw a P0301? I knew I should have replaced it while I had the intake off and I forgot. It's probably what made the lifter go bad.

Something in the primary wiring or yes, it could be MDS solenoid. I'm sure you reset code...? The ecm may still be compensating for the failed lifter but I'm not a tech so...

These engines are easy . Take all the MDS crap and throw in the the trash. No more codes once rebuilt and tuned.
