2011 Ram 5.7. Stock lifter collapsed at 162k miles. I purchased the AMS Racing MDS delete kit with Diablo Tuner. Installed everything. Turned off MDS with Tuner. Truck started right up. Runs great!
However I have codes P0016 and P000B and I can’t get rid of them! I’ve changed the crank and cam sensors. I’ve changed the VVT solenoid TWICE. Changed oil with Mobil1 5w20 and NAPA Gold (Wix) filter. I can turn off the CEL with the tuner and it drives perfect. Idles perfect. Runs great. EXCEPT that when CEL is on, those codes cause the truck to go into limp-home mode so it won’t shift higher than 4th gear and won’t downshift at all.
I’m at a loss of what to do next. I’ve read every post and watched every video on these codes that I could find. All say to replace VVT solenoid. Which I’ve done twice now. Also checked wires to solenoid. They look good and I’m getting power to the solenoid.
Again if I clear the codes with the tuner it runs and drives PERFECT. UNTIL the next time I start the truck. After about 15 seconds the codes reappear.
I don’t know if I need to pull the front cover again to check timing or what. If the timing was off by one tooth I wouldn’t think the truck would run or start as well as it does.
Thanks!

Check your cam timing with cyl 1 at TDC asap!

PCM is basically saving you right now.

If cam timing was off it wouldn't start and idle perfectly.

Sounds like your tuner is only temporarily turning off and not actually removing it completely from your ECM. Having the same issue except without limp mode. Still runs fine but cant get to pass emissions. Dirty tag since November.

Has a cam/crank relearn been done? You need a scantool to do it, not sure but Alfaobd might be able to do it too...

I like your thinking. Would certainly like to know if this was the case. I would also like to know if alpha obd can do that. I just bought it over the weekend, I'll have to check that out soon. I thought it could turn off MDS is the ecm but, no. It's capable of many things though, pull my "pin".....so that's a bonus!

I dont know what kit you purchased . Did your kit come with a phase limiter or lock ? Some aftermarket non MDS cams require this. . And on an added note : If the cam is not stock , you may have to purchase a custom tune for it . I know a guy !
The stock PCM calibration is written based on a certain set of engine parameters. The timing map, base start-up fuel map, closed loop fueling, power enrichment and injector pulse width, to name a few, are programmed based on a certain amount of air and fuel entering the cylinder. When you install a larger camshaft, especially a camshaft with a whole lot more duration and overlap, the valves are being held open for a longer period of time which allows more air to enter the cylinder.

The PCM can only compensate for so much. P.S. There is NO Cam Crank Relearn procedure !

Cam swaps require custom tunes and the tuner will also send you a startup tune.

Way beyond what a scan tool can do.

Right I understand that a tune is necessary for a cam, I was just throwing out options to try before he pulled the motor apart again

I have the same problem at the moment. Showing p0016 and p000b. Truck runs good, no miss or anything. Have the AMS racing kit with non mds stock cam, non mds lifters and diablo tuner with 91 tune with mds disabled. Truck has no ticks and seems like its running smooth as silk. Any ideas?

A diablows 91 octane tune wont do anything for a cam swap. You need a custom tune and a startup tune.

Truck is 2011, its factory spec non mds cam and lifters. Not trying to gain anything just trying to eliminate mds. You saying that i still need a tune with factory spec?
