What’s y’all’s opinion on deleting MDS? I’ve heard some say it will ruin lifters after some time, and I’ve heard others say the MDS style lifters along with the computer’s adjustment for oil pressure doesn’t harm the engine. Is it worth deleting MDS other than to unlock full power of the truck? I have a tuner and I’m trying to decide whether to go ahead with it or not on my 2019.
Also can I deactivate it with the tuner alone or do I need to physically change anything under the hood? Thanks

There is no reason to get rid of the MDS. It is not dysfunctional part. If you hate, just turn it off or temporarily disable it. I think you just need a ODB reader no tuner to deactivate, you can disable from everytime you start up if you want. It is not a functional part of the lifter problem. Though there are some theories, in real world it doesnt seem to effect the lifter cam issues.

It’s hard to disable on a 2019. Pretty sure you need an unlocked ecu

It can be disabled by the dealer(or shop) with the right programmer. I have been reading about this due to the fact that I'll need to disable it for the the new trans I'm getting in my truck, but also have been planning on a new cam and lifters in the future. As long as the correct oil and lack of long idle times on your engine you should never see an issue with the "said lifter problems" even with the MDS deactivated.

From experience: the MDS on the 5.7 1500 trucks works very well and I noticed the fuel savings.. but on my 2500 6.4 it's a different story. If I was able to drive my 2500 at speeds between 50Kms and 90Kms one might see the MDS be worth it but my city driving is not in my favor that way and highway driving the only time MDS works is down hill with the wind on the back. For me to get rid of my MDS would fine due to it not doing anything for me. Also to me deleting the MDS doesn't unlock anymore power from your engine it just stops the engine from lowering the power output.

I thought the heavy duty trucks didn't have MDS? Is that a Canadian thing?

My personal experience with MDS is the only thing I notice is it kicking in or out of it and the vibration/bad sound when it's in MDS, which I find very annoying. Always been something I've turned off each time I put the truck in gear.

The 5.7 in 2500 has no MDS but the 6.4 does but after 2014 there's no more 5.7. I very rarely here the drone from the MDS with the stock exhaust but when I had a exhaust leak from the bolts coming lose then we could hear it more so would imagine that with an aftermarket exhaust it would be more noticeable.

Thanks for the info, I do remember the 5.7 ending in the heavy duties sometime back then but didn't know they then forced the MDS with the 6.4.

I've definitely noticed the mds more with aftermarket exhausts (had 3 4th gen rams with aftermarket mufflers) but my 21 I have left stock and can still notice/feel it very easily. Audibly it's definitely not as bad as it is with an aftermarket setup but if I'm not playing music I can pick up on that as well. Although I hear/feel things some of my passengers don't so I may either be crazy or just my hearing is a little different.

Can you elaborate on this? From what I understand for me anyways (2019 Classic) the only way to turn off the MDS is by unlocking the ECU and putting in a tune. There are some other programmers that claim to turn off the MDS, but to my knowledge they just constantly vary the throttle which is just as annoying.

Dealerships will not disable MDS. They are not allowed to do that. Maybe if you were good friends with the owner, service adviser, etc.

You can be right about unlocking the pcm.. my 2014 is not locked but without some facts to back me up, from what I understand "turning off the mds" should be capable at a dealer/specialty level .. I could stand corrected.

Or off warranty.. ya I can see that, just saying that not very many systems that can do this only certain programmers.. have very little knowledge of what ones they'd be.

Disabling MDS can be done with a tuner, and, on 2015(?) and later models, an unlocked ECU. You can also disable it by putting the truck in gear limit mode. It's just that you have to do it every time you put it in Drive. I don't believe that you will cause any damage by doing so.

Deleting MDS requires changing the cam and lifters.
