Consider me lucky, 2014 1500 with 170000 kms and original battery, plus it get bitterly cold here, hope it lasts a few more years

my factory batteries gave up their ghosts

let's all have a small moment of silence, and press F to pay respects to my wallet and plans.

My 17 Ram 1500 was made on March 13 2017. I have NEVER has a oe battery last this long. I had it checked by my dealer who said it checked out very good. So I am going to let it ride until it goes out. I have never drained the battery, and by what I have been told draining it down and having to rechard it really hurts a battery. My truck has almost 76,000 miles on it.

Thanks....$44 for a tester “hecho en China” seems reasonable in today’s dollars.

Looks like the conversation is going a little sideways now. Can't compare 1500's to the load a cummins diesel puts on a battery and how long they last.

Also these newer trucks electronics are a lot less tolerant of voltage drop. At the first hint of the batteries going bad they will not allow the truck to start (or even try).

Battery makers seem to have a timer that starts with the first turn of the key. 36 months later you are on borrowed time, but 200 skins puts right back in the game. It’s called job security

Three years is good for any battery. I've ended up with Walmart batteries mostly for price and convenience. Several times I've had them die in strange places or after normal hours. Could usually found a Walmart to exchange or buy a new one. Bought one at 11:00 PM one night when it was freezing. Nothing like using a pair of pliers to round bolts while you lose feeling in your hands as frostbite takes hold. At that time and place you take whatever battery is available.

My 17 made it a little past 3 years. Noticed one morning it didn't start like normal, drove it downtown to go for my morning walk. It didn't start, jumped it and drove it to the dealer and had it replaced.

Replies are useless without location. Heat kills batteries, so people in Florida will experience shorter battery life than those in New England or Michigan.
Also, if you never run your batteries below 50%, they will last a lot longer than someone who repeatedly brings their battery down to a 30% charge. If your truck is only used occasionally, parasitic draw can discharge the battery more than you'd think.

If yo let your battery run flat, even once, its life is severely shortened.

No, it's 12v. Cummins pickup trucks have been 12v for as long as I can remember, at least 25+ years

.
A former coworker had an '06 (I think) Cummins and he told me he had to buy 2 batteries. He said it was 24v but he wasn't the sharpest bowling ball in the bunch so he probably assumed 24v. So apparently they have them in parallel for extra current.

Well finally my factory battery died yesterday evening at five years and eight months. I had my suspicions it was slowly on its way out this last winter, but it got me through it.
