2014 ram 1500. 5.7 hemi 230 000km

Loud metal on metal ticking. At first start in idle noise is heard. Rpms go up speed of ticking goes up. Once mds kicks in the noise goes away. Doesn't matter if cold or hot start. Exhaust manifolds were changed 5 months ago. Any ideas on what this could be?

That's what I thought. I ordered up a new cam and lifters (no mds) and will be removing the celenoids with the caps. My biggest concern was I thought it could be the rod bearings. But I couldn't understand how the ticks went away once the truck turned on the mds. So it must be a problem with 1 4 6 7 cylinder. Just strange cause it does sound lower end but I should still be able to hear the ticks since all 8 cylinders are moving still. Could it be based on compresion? Or still just the lifters and cam?

Do you have any codes? Generally there are misfire codes when the cam goes.

Pull your valve covers and observe the amount of travel on all valves ,from one to the others .

Exhaust manifolds had them replaced 6 months ago. Double checked today and everything looks good and tight. If there was a problem with the crank or rod bearings. Would it still make a tik noise be constant? Cause when the mds system turns on it goes away immediately. Even from 100 coasting down to 30 there is no tik. Once stopped the tik resumes? Would this be lifters and cam or could it be the lower end?

@Hemi395 did some great research on these rams, found out when mds is on it lubricates the lifters better. What you describe sounds like standard hemi tick lifter version. Look up did redline kill your hemi tick, I'd try 5w30 redline with a royal purple 20-820 filter, and see if anything changes about your tick. This oil is full of EP additives, it coats metal when the oil isnt there, sounds like a good chance this is happening. Good success rate but not 100. Sometimes people change lifters to still have them tick, try a lubrication strategy first.

Is the cadence a tick, like a sewing machine? or a knock?

I'll try that oil you recommended. It's a constant tick right from start of the engine. No difference from cold or hot. Sounds more like metal on metal than a low putt. I'll be dismantling manifolds to get a better look.

Might be a crapped out cam. Do a test on the cam lobe (i.e. lifter travel) on that and a couple other cylinders.

If it's low movement, Drain the oil in a clean pan and look for debris/metsl. Pop off the oil filter, cut it apart and see if there are any shavings. If the oil is new enough, you can put it back in (filter it though).

This happened to me 2 on the same year truck, it turned out to be the manifold bolts. The first time it was covered under the warranty, they replaced the broken ones with factory bolts. The problem came back a year later, (now off warranty) not sure if it was the same bolts or others, so I replaced them all with aftermarket bolts from Dorman. Knock on wood but 3 years later I have no problem.

Like I say, before you go putting in expensive oil, cut the current oil filter housing off and inspect the filter media for shavings, metal, etc. And the oil too. If all is good, that is a good sign. If you have lots of metal, maybe put in some cheap oil till you get a chance to dig deeper. With a loose rocker, that's cause enough to dig even deeper. You don't want to run it with a bunch of metal potentially in the oil pan. Might still be rebuildable.

yeah sounds like MDS lifter gone bad... you were about due for a top end refresh anyways, bottom end is fine..

I would rebuild a top end around 150-200k miles depending upon severity of usage...

I was to suggest to change to Royal Purpple. I fix mine with just that , but reading about 2mm gap on lifter and cam nobe. It sound to be to much clearance. Check with mech tech

I just went through this, check the exhaust manifold bolts closet to the firewall, believe it or not, they may have broke.

Drained the oil. Ran a magnet through it and felt around didn't turn up really anything. Cut open the oil filter there was one piece maybe 1/5 the size of a pin head. Removed the heads. Valves are good and closed no play. Cylinder walls have marks on the. Like in the pi ture. Nothing to the touch tho. All lifters seem fine. Roll easy. I got the wrong part to pull the harmonic pulley. Will be checking cam tomorrow. Only thing so far was the loose rocker..
