Very frustrating evening.. 2018 Ram Express. My dream truck. I’ve always been a Dodge fanboy. My dad retired from Chrysler. I lost him and my mom last year at the same time, and I swore I’d keep this truck forever. It’s my DD with 72k miles. I bought it new. Oil changed every 5k with full synthetic, penzoil 5w20..

Tonight, we were traveling down the highway, and I got frustrated at someone varying their speed from 55-65 in the right lane, in a 60, so I gunned it and passed them. About 10 miles later, I pulled over at a gas station and noticed this tick. I instantly thought I snapped a manifold bolt and it was a serious exhaust leak. But, I really have a bad feeling about this. Attached is a video of what it sounds like. When the mds kicks in, it goes away…

Attached is a cold start, which is the first one. It was much louder last night when the motor was hot.

I'm terrible at deciphering over my device's speakers.

Have you 100% for sure ruled out it's not an exhaust manifold leak? This can really mimic the sound you have.

Get yourself a mechanics stethascope, and start listening along the valve covers and oilpan, that sounds a little more serious then an exhaust leak

I have not. No clue on how to really do that. Some have said if they manifold cover is loose, it’s probably just a manifold bolt. I have not tried that yet.

Tug on the heat shields if their loose it may just be the bolts

All though i just watched the video and that dont sound good. Does it go away when hot? Hot idle tick usually means lifter

Wow, sorry man but that sounds pretty bad. Hard to really say what it is. I would get that into someone asap. Wouldn’t put any more miles than absolutely necessary. Not an exhaust leak imho.

At the race track the two most common problems that make that sound are loose or broken exhaust bolts, and fried lifters (which usually wear the cam lobe). I'd start with the manifold though as it is more common.

That doesnt sound like lifter tick to me, my guess is exhaust, outside chance it is a valve. Warped mani or maybe bolts, find it.

Sorry about your truck. That video sound exactly the way mine did. If I closed my eyes, I would have thought I was listening to my truck. I had 120,000 on my MDS 5.7. Had cam and lifters replaced after I bought it. Flat lobe #1. Had 2 sets (supposedly) of lifters on right bank replaced. Still ticks. Replaced (myself) all four rocker shafts. Tick all but gone. I have only put less than a mile on it, but will drive it to work tomorrow and see how good, or bad my mechanic skills are. Great trucks. Crappy engine/oil flow design. It defies logic!

I hope for you that it is an exhaust leak, but that sounds like valvetrain to me. Keep us posted.
