Hello, I'm considering getting a Ram 1500 and am interested in knowing your experience for both V6 and Hemi, specifically gas mileage and reliability?

I have a hybrid SUV (no plug in), and its okay, but mileage drops some 4-6MPG during the Minnesota winter and it takes about 5 miles of driving before any real heat enters the cabin (since it insists on using battery).

I like the idea of the eTorque because of MPG and since this is likely my last vehicle, reducing gas costs over the long haul is important. That said, I am concerned about battery replacement costs.

The V6 dual turbo is intriguing, but that could be costly to maintain down the road as well.

Which leaves a plain jane Hemi and V6 in the mix which won't deliver the same MPG, but certainly will have lower maintenance costs in the long run. I had a 2018 Durango, V6 and it got good gas mileage, but was a bit under powered in my opinion.

I appreciate any insights and thanks.

I have no experience with the V6 (Pentastar) etorque version, but I'm on my second etorque Hemi truck. My driving is more than 90% highway, so etorque isn't really doing anything for me as far as mpg goes. If you do a lot of city driving, it will really help as long as you keep stop/start enabled. The more city driving you do the more you will benefit from the etorque.

Just to correct what you said, there is no V6 dual turbo option. There will supposedly be a dual turbo inline 6 (Hurricane) option in future model years, but it's not available at this time.

Also, there is not a non-etorque V6 option available for these trucks.

Honestly, the etorque on the 5.7 will save you minimal gas - most likely not even measurable, maybe up to 1 mpg IF you do a lot of stop light sitting and it shuts off at every light.

Ecodiesel will get significantly better mpg and I mean significantly ( up to 10+ mpg over the hemi), however you have added fuel cost and maint. costs. Fuel costs can vary by quite a bit depending on where you live.

No matter which you get, they might all offer a cold weather package as an option or add on that will plug in and keep the engine warm so that you get heat quickly and better mpg in the winter.

There are 2022 models at the dealer here that do not have e-torque. It is an option - I think about $1000 CA.

5.7 hemi is available with or without eTorque assist system. Personally I don’t think it’s worth eTorque unless you do a lot of city driving. Slight towing rating increase with eTorque? One thing to know is eTorque comes with auto stop at traffic lights. In hot weather the A/C does not blow cold at all when the engine is stopped. Keep that in mind too.

The HVAC system takes priority over stop/start. So if the temp inside the cabin rises too much the engine will restart to run the A/C, even if you are still stopped.

My work truck was a 2021 tradesman with the etorque V6. It was reliable and I averaged 20-21 mpg mixed. Felt a little slow off the line though.

This is true. If its particularly hot out, I turn off the stop start until the cab is cooled, then resume using stop/start as I continue on my ride. The cab usually stays pretty comfortable once it has been cooled off.

I have the v6 in my company pro master and I HATE it!!! Nooooooo power. Cruise control can’t get it up a hill. My 2014 ED is far far better in every way.

I have a 2019 Ram V6 Crew Cab with 30,000 miles. Only problem I had was the Rollover Valve caused a problem pumping gas into the tank. It would stop after about a 1/4 gallon. Was fixed under warranty.

My MPG is 21.5 on the one trip I monitored from beginning to end. I made a point of running no faster than 75 MPH on all freeway. Maintaining mostly in 8th gear. Around home I average 18.5 MPG. I'm glad I bought the V6, especially now with the cost of Diesel (thank you Joe Brandon). Oh, and there's lots of power especially with the gears.

2018 quad 1500. No etorque. Plenty of power. Average 21mpg. Was problem free till I just hit 97k and blew the head gasket. #2 cylinder threw a code. Was filling with coolant. Truck got hot a few times as I wasn’t near home. Putting in a used motor right now to be on the safe side. Not cheap!!! I researched these before buying and found nothing to stop me from buying this and expecting 200k, non-major problem miles.

I have a '19 Longhorn with e torque. I don't believe you will really notice an improvement in gas mileage. But I tow a 35ft RV trailer and the extra torque is great. If not towing I would not bother with it

I like the eTorque on my 2019 5.7 limited with 3.92 axle ratio. I get 15 mpg when I am not towing and 10 mpg towing my 7000 lb travel trailer.
If you have the 3.21 axle ratio I here from others they get 20 mpg. If you buy a truck, it is going to use fuel. If you buy the diesel engine the savings you get from the better mpg is used up in maintenance and DEF fluid.

My 21 etorque V6 only gets an average of 17.5 miles to a gallon with all city driving locally, but if I combine any HW driving it gets up to 20 MPG. The engine cut off when stopped can be annoying because it's not that smooth at times when you feel it kicking on.

I have a 2020 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi with eTorque. Bought new and now has 13,000 miles. I find the engine stopping irritating but not really an issue. I'm old enough to remember when having your engine stop at a busy intersection was a very bad thing. I average over 21 MPG out of a tank of gas on interstate highways. My normal mix of country and city roads produces about 17.5 MPG. Mine is the Longhorn Limited. We've owned Cadillacs, Lincolns, Mercedes, and BMWs. This is easily the most comfortable, best driving vehicle we've ever owned.

Check the cost to repair or replace the eTorque components and then make your decision. For my part I did this and decided against the eTorque engines. They may provide RAM with better CAFE numbers but as with unreliable ecodiesel engines they are expensive for the truck owners.
