I guess I've never experienced whatever you're describing, the RFE in my WJ and the one in my Ram kinda just work. Shifts were a bit soft in the WJ compared to what my personal preferences might be but not to the point of feeling like "flare" (completely failed clutch material or lack of apply pressure) and in my Ram there's just no problem at all, it shifts through the gears pretty normally. From the beginning these things were made to skip 3rd gear on upshift and only use it for 4->3 downshift on throttle so there's nothing abnormal about that.

Took the truck out today after my 20K trans fluid change, fluid looked good, no issues. Drove it to get to level ground and at 150°F the truck was in the middle of the 2 HOT hatch marks, and weirdly now since it’s there (knock on wood) it seems the cooling issues i was having before with it are gone. It hit 150 in park and after that it slowly started to drop off in temp, in neutral it wouldn’t hit 150, and stayed at around 140. I guess that’s where the truck likes it’s fluid.

Typing this up for future reference.

It is strange how Chrysler transmission got the reputation as 'terrible' when the old 3spds were considered legendary. The later 4 speeds were based on the 3 speed designs. From everything I've read this goes back to when they moved away from Dexron to AFT+ fluids.
People ran Dexron because it was so much cheaper though it was not compatible with the the new 4spds. It caused the clutches to slip too much so in many cause the tranny was done before 100k miles.
