I know, I get your point. I still get to enjoy all the other cool features, though.
(But I'd take a bet that 99% of miles driven in PW's are on-road)

Been told many times that where my wife and I live are that 1 percenter, but it can be challenging without the right equipment.

All,
as I am going to use my PW primarily as a daily driver and not really off-road (I know, I know...) I don't think the stock Duratracs are the right choice. When I test drove one, I already noticed the clearly audible hum, which probably won't get better at highway speeds. I guess there is no dispute that mud tires with their block profile will always be louder than highway tires.

Anyway, I intend to have them swapped right at the dealer like probably quite a few of you also did (going to 35's or 37's).

So what did you do with your new stock tires? The dealer said they won't buy back tires, so I'd be stuck with a set that's not exactly new because it has already been mounted and the stickers removed. And I'm not so sure I could sell them around here for a decent price (say, 70-80% of their value).

Thanks!

There's not a whole lot of tire options going to a 35 or 37 size in a highway tread for a 17 inch wheel. Might as well sell the wheels too.

Surprisingly, there are quite a few choices. And good ones, too.

Oh, there are others, but I heard the Defender is at least pretty far up on the list.
Others would be Yokohama Geolandar, Goodyear Wrangler Fortitude, Bridgestone Dueler, just to name a few.

Check the tire specs against the Power Wagon's 33" size. Only the largest of the Geolander HT's is slightly smaller in diameter than the OEM Duratracs.

I'm not so sure about the tolerances allowed for tires, but:
285*0.7=199.5mm tire height, or 7.85"

So the tire diameter in inches would be 17+(2*7.85)=32.7.

As 285/70R17 is the size of both the Duratrac and the highway tires, neither are truly 33" in diameter.
(And that's only for new tires and not under load)

Edit: seems like tire manufacturers don't really care about the specs. Michelin lists 32.72" diameter (close enough), whereas Goodyear says the Duratrac is 33", so technically out of specification.
In any case, the circumferential difference is only 1.7%.

All good on paper, but the specs for the 285 70R17 don't mean anything when the manufacturer doesn't make HT tires in that large of a size. The Fortitude and Dueler HT aren't available that large. The 33" (32.7") is the largest Geolander HT size.

Looked at the non LT tires..

The Power Wagon on 35's plus just looks better than 33's.

True, larger sizes on 17" rims are all offroad tires, but there are options for larger rims that get close to 35". Not sure if looks are worth the higher gear ratio, higher unsprung weight and likely lower mpg. As I would not really benefit from the increased offroad-clearance.
But I get it why people run these tires on their trucks.

Our nearby state (Wyoming and Utah) posted speed limits are 80 MPH. Semi trucks do 85 plus and fill the highway with 70% trailer trucks tailgating 4 wheelers doing 80. Run 35's on both our Power Wagon and Cummins (3.42-1). Lowered the RPM's noticeably. Both have 6 speeds. No noticeable change in fuel mileage and still get 10.5 towing my 3,500 pound trailers at 65 MPH with my Power Wagon as with the 33's. A better ride with the taller sidewall tires especially through our I-70 potholes. I'm at 8,500 feet elevation which cuts the Power Wagon horsepower substantially, but the 6.4L didn't lack any additional feel in power loss with the added unsprung tire weight.

285 75R17 is a 34 inch. I ran this size on my last set. The spare mounts underneath perfectly. Since it's the same width as the OEM the TPMS Thresholds can be the same even though it's a Load Range E with a higher maximum cold PSI.

Somehow I didn't even have the Nitto on my radar. Plus, I totally forgot about the spare..

So were you happy with them?

Also look at Toyo AT2 or AT3 and Falken at3w. these are pretty mild. I have had all 3 and they are smooth and quiet. I switch between stock tires and wheels and a set of 35's Toyo RT's on AEV wheels and there is no difference in MPG and the 35's are actually smoother and quieter than the duratracs. speeds here are 80mph as well. In less than a month I am headed to Moab and I have made that trip many times and tires just don't make a big enough difference in mpg to not run a beefier tire.

Currently running Toyo C/T's on my Power Wagon and A/T III's on a Cummins. Quite happy with the Toyo Tire products of which Nitto is their brand.

My 285 75R17 tires were Cooper ST-Maxx.

I will be the first to say that people have the right to do what they want with their money. If they want to buy a Power Wagon and put highway tires on it that is their choice and their right. However I still retain the right to make fun of them;). I feel the same way when I get stuck behind a new ZO6 Corvette running 7 mph under the speed limit on a back road, or about all of the Jeep Rubicons with lifts, mud tires, and winches (oh, and don't forget about the LED lightbars that probably aren't even hooked up) sitting in the soccer field parking lot that have probably never even been in 4wd, yet alone had the lockers or swaybar disconnect used.

You will be able to make a far better deal at a tire shop than the dealer will give you. My 2500 long box came with 18" Firestonse Transforce as the off road tire. Decent pavement tires but absolutely useless in mud and snow. Put Duratracs on it with less the 2000 miles on the truck. Luckily the original tires have been recalled so I may get out from under them because even at $400 for the set there was zero interest. If you can find another 2500 owner that wants Duratracs it would be an easy swap for the tires that come on the non-power wagon models. The good news however is there is a LOT more demand for the Duratracs than there is for the Firestone crap. A lot of guys like me have been running Duratracs for decades as a good all round, no change out tire.
I agree with you. I thought the Duratrac was considered a good AT tire. Why would he want anything less than an AT tire on a Power Wagon? Even if you are not going off road the AT tire is excellent for wet and snowy conditions on pavement.
