My 2019 classic Hemi has been running perfectly for 37,000 miles….until yesterday.

Each time I started it, I got some lifter noise, sounded like multiple lifters. The oil pressure gauge goes immediately to the middle of the gauge when starting but the oil can light on the dash takes several seconds to go off on startup.

Of course, I immediately checked the oil and it’s full and recently changed (2,000 miles ago). I’m using PUP 5w20 with a mopar filter. No mods, no tuners, just a 74 year old guy driving his truck. Ha

Oil pressure seems to be higher than normal. Generally at 70+ mph I’m seeing 48-49 psi, now I see 51 at 30 mph.

I’m at a loss and the only thing I can think of is the driveway which is quite steep. I generally back in which causes the oil to flow to the front of the pan. With the oil pickup in the back of the pan I’m thinking that it’s not getting enough oil on startup. I don’t have a clue, so any suggestions would be appreciated!!

I did buy the truck last October as a certified used truck so I got the extended warranty. Plus, I don’t know how it was taken care of before.

If the engine was neglected, and sludge plugged up the filter, would that not cause the bypass to maintain oil pressure???

I don't have an oil pressure gauge on my 2019 classic, but I can see an oil pressure reading if I'm toggled to the right screen on the center display. On a cold start I've seen my oil pressure go to ~60psig. At cruising speeds it's generally in the high 40's to low 50s. Hot idle is ~38. I run synthetic 5w30 in mine.

The only times I've gotten 2-3sec worth of loud lifter tick is if I only run it for a few seconds to move it, etc. The next restart may or may not tick for 2-3sec.

I wouldn't think you've got any sludge build up with such a new, low mileage truck. The only word of caution I have with those warranties is, if there aren't proper records of oil changes from before you bought the truck, they can deny any engine mechanical issues.

Same for me, in my '15, I get a couple seconds of clatter if I have only done a short jaunt to my in-laws 1-1/2 blocks away. Upon restart, will get the same clatter.

It has done this ever since I have had it at 28,600 miles. Has 140,000 now. As far as oil pressure, I only have the display in the EVIC, and it takes several seconds for the display to read the correct oil psi at startup.

If you think the oil filter is bypassing, I would change it out. If it is bypassing, it is not filtering as it should be. It is also possible to have a bad filter. I believe it has happened to some members here. Cheap to try and see.

Interesting….mine just started doing the exact same thing yesterday and today. I noticed too that the little oil can on the dash screen stays RED for several seconds after startup. The oil pressure gauge jumps to half way immediately on startup whether or not the lifters are banging.

I’m afraid I’m getting ready for a f***ing catastrophe. Damn…39,000 miles.

Try using different oil and filter before sweating it. Redline + Royal Purple 20-820 or 10-48.

In fact, I'd try a replacement filter right away before changing the oil, just swap a new RP one in, top up your oil and try again.

A bad/faulty anti drain back valve might be the issue, allowing oil to drain back into the filter after shut off.

I've had issues with this in the winter where if I don't get my oil hot (> 60 degrees celcius) then the next start she will rattle like the dickens for 2 seconds and then immediately quiet down.

My son works at a speed shop and they use Royal purple in everything. So, he suggested changing to api Royal Purple 5w20 (to maintain warranty in case it blows) and a Wix XP filter.

So, I gave it a shot and so far it’s ok. I filled up the new filter like always and filled it with 7 quarts of the RP 5w20. The lifters rattled some on initial startup but have been quiet since.

We’ll just have to wait and see. I did notice that the oil pressure is up about 2 pounds under all driving conditions. My son expected that because he said PUP is a very thin 5w20. Who knows.

Use a quality filter like RP or FRAM Ultra Synthetic. I found on MY 19 DT truck, the OEM Mopar anti valves start getting a lil weird after they get some miles on them, I start getting rattle. To OP: Having all oil to front of motor/engine/pan, hmmmmmmm, maybe, but I am no mechanic. U can go to a thicker oil than PUP 5W20, go to 5W 30 in a quality oil. You ask a oil question, you are gonna get 100 replies on different types, LOL, same as filters. BURLA has the best oil/filter thread in this forum.

Yep….lots of oil opinions. But that offers more options if there is an issue. It seems like each Hemi engine has a mind of its own. Ha

My 2019 classic start ticking at 25-28000 km,after trying bunch of different oil&filter, the only oil that kill the tick is conventional oil 5w20 and mopar oil filter, and becoze of the warranty, from now one this job is done by the dealer, after the warranty is gone,I will take care of it myself.

Have your son check it with an oil pressure gauge.

FWIW, my HEMI'S current oil psi at 70 mph is 52-54 and hot idle is 48-49. Cold start up is ~ 55 and closer to 60 if the outside temps are around 45-60 degrees on Red Line 5w/30 and a Royal Purple 20-820 oil filter.

The previous oil change was also Red Line 5w/30 but I was using a Purolator Boss 24651and the oil psi was identical to the current oil strategy.

Prior to that I was using Pennzoil 5w/30 and a PB 24651 and my HEMI'S oil psi was ~ 5 psi less at hot idle/highway speeds. My oil change intervals have always been at 3000 miles. I could go much longer, but I'm retired now and put around 3000 miles a year on my HEMI, so I'm basically at about one oil change a year.

Yeh, each HEMI is different. My brothers 2012 HEMI psi's are different from mine and he doesn't use the same oil strategy as I do.

So, I hope this helps you some, OP.

Thanks, folks, for all of the good replies. So far, I have started it about 15-18 times, both cold and warm starts. No one lifter tick heard “yet”. I also change around 3-3,500 miles and I’ll continue with the Royal Purple and wix filter until it starts ticking again. Then, I’ll try something different.

I’ve thought about trying a conventional or synthetic blend, as they tend to be a bit thicker. I do like the full synthetic oils, especially in the winter months. We’ll see.

My psi is 53 55 warm at speed, 58 to 60 at cold start. 47 to 48 a warm idle.

Redline 5w30, SRT filter
My warm idle is a tad lower than yours, but other than that mine is identical.
