Hello!

With these great gas prices we are experiencing! Has anyone switched to 87 octane from 89. I haven’t yet. I will next fill up! I never thought I would! But this is getting ridiculous!
Take care,
Matt

Yeah, I did when the price difference between 87 and 89 doubled from 15 cents to 30 cents.
Yeah, I know it's only $3 more per fillup, but geez - it's the principle of the thing. Monopoly pricing.

I'm not **** enough anymore to run a documented price / value analysis. Doubling the price differential just seemed outrageous to me.
None of the stations have Top Tier additives now, either, but still charging as much. A-holes.

I’ve written a few of these posts today where I fear someone on the forum will set me ablaze. LOL First, I’m a CA guy so I’m well adapted to paying too much for everything, including fuel. 91 Octane is 6.69 at the nearest chevron. Gotta love Costco But even that is nearing 6 now For 87.

Do the gas rams require 91 Octane? Are they considered high compression engines? If not, then burn what you feel comfortable burning, but I’ve always burnt what the manufacturer recommends.

91 Octane can be pressurized more before combustion vs. 87, so your truck will alter its timing electronically to prevent any pre-ignition or otherwise known as engine knock. Long term, lots of arguments if this will cause any noticeable damage since your timing can auto-adjust. If you don’t have a high compression engine, I don’t think it will ever make a difference.

Others might argue that premium has better detergents etc - I’d rather just dump in my own fuel additive so I know for sure it’s in there. Who really trusts big oil anyway.

try this fuel cleaner, and as a bonus you can see how it will clean piston tops, this was Coreys truck one treatment... 3 vehicles same result..

top of piston, hard to find anything that will clean like this..

  • Cleans injectors, carburetors, valve and combustion chamber deposits with a concentrated blend of the most powerful high-temp and low-temp detergents available
  • Cleans all forms of fuel injectors, including GDI
  • Enhances fuel stability; reduces gum and varnish formation
  • Use one bottle per tank for most effective treatment, cleans to nearly 100% efficiency in one treatment
  • Reduces need for octane by up to two points
  • Contains synthetic upper cylinder lubricant
  • Cleans pollution control valves
  • Suitable for use with oxygenated fuel
  • Safe for continual use
  • Same chemistry is also available in 4oz dosage as Complete Fuel System Cleaner - Powersports

I'm about to switch 87 on the next fillup, 89 just hit $5.04 here. I'll have to load my stock tune in just to be able to run 87 without a boatload of ST Knock.

My truck knocks too much when towing on 87 so I'm forced to run 89 and it's going to hurt in a few weeks. Is it possible to load an "mpg" tune which works better than factory on 87 even if at the cost of 15 to 20 hp or so? I don't care that much about the power at this point, I just don't want to hear marbles from the engine bay when climbing a grade.

I'm sure a lot of people have. I'm not one of them. The cost difference is not material to my budget and I didn't buy a hemi to save money or have it pull timing when I want the power the most.

I bet you can easily beat factory 89 tune with a tune for 87 gas, you loose nothing except the cost of the tuner, you will make gains to boot.

Octane gas like what oil and filter to use, LOL. I personally run 89. All of my gas tools require 89, so I just fuel the truck, cans etc with 89. Just works for dis Boird.

Well, I got the cheapo tune box that comes with 8 canned tunes instead of a single Hemi fever NHRA Drag strip flamethrower tune, so I can switch tunes by pressing cruise control buttons. Very convenient. I run the economy tune when unloaded, now on 87 octane. I switch to 89 octane and tow w/o MDS when towing. Almost all my towing is preplanned, so I can do so.
I've never even tried the performance tune requiring 91 octane. Not racing a heavy duty tow truck.

I ran 87 in my ‘21 2500 6.4 on a cross country trip last year, pulling my 5W. Never had an issue. Getting ready to do the same thing on the 19th. I thought about running 89 but prices are just too crazy. Gas prices are certainly largely due to policy but the oil companies are
making record profits. Bad policy + greed makes for a bad combination.

Just get whoever does your custom tune to adjust it. Its not rocket science.
Thought about doing that too. I've been playing around with HP tuners just adding some things to the stock tune but leaving the timing tables alone

I've used 87 since my 14 was driven off the dealer's lot. Runs fine, the computer may pull the timing, but not anything I've ever noticed. Runs strong and recently passed 125K. I have normally kept my daily driver until 100k then buy another, but decided to keep this one.
