My truck knocks too much when towing on 87 so I'm forced to run 89 and it's going to hurt in a few weeks. Is it possible to load an "mpg" tune which works better than factory on 87 even if at the cost of 15 to 20 hp or so? I don't care that much about the power at this point, I just don't want to hear marbles from the engine bay when climbing a grade.
This is exactly what I found with my truck, even on the stock tune. From watching ST Knock on my truck on the stock tune, 87 doesn't run very well. It pulls timing whenever its under load after it warms up. So I guess in theory these trucks "can" run on 87 but you're definitely losing some power and fuel economy. Detonation is never a good thing and if the truck is audibly knocking the PCM is pulling timing.

try this fuel cleaner, and as a bonus you can see how it will clean piston tops, this was Coreys truck one treatment... 3 vehicles same result..

top of piston, hard to find anything that will clean like this..

View attachment 493406

  • Cleans injectors, carburetors, valve and combustion chamber deposits with a concentrated blend of the most powerful high-temp and low-temp detergents available
  • Cleans all forms of fuel injectors, including GDI
  • Enhances fuel stability; reduces gum and varnish formation
  • Use one bottle per tank for most effective treatment, cleans to nearly 100% efficiency in one treatment
  • Reduces need for octane by up to two points
  • Contains synthetic upper cylinder lubricant
  • Cleans pollution control valves
  • Suitable for use with oxygenated fuel
  • Safe for continual use
  • Same chemistry is also available in 4oz dosage as Complete Fuel System Cleaner - Powersports
Been using this for while and like it. Agree with your other post too. My truck doesn't run well on 87 either.

Been running 87 for months now, runs about the same as the 89, ive felt no change so if you wanna save some bucks don’t worry about hurting anything.

I have the 87 and 93 tune with a Hemi fever tune on my Diablo tuner. It works great with the 87 tune. I've had people tell me it spark knocks, I just can't hear it. Love how people knows my vehicle better than me. Probably won't get my money back for what I paid for the tuner but it works great and runs well. Wouldn't shock me to find out fuel is the same in all 3 pumps anyway as crooked as things have become.

I've definitely noticed the heat thing where the pinging shows up usually only when the engine is at operating temp. The first 5/10 minutes (especially in winter) I hear nothing.

So is the best tuner "Hp tuners"? And then you just purchase a canned tune from these guys for a 5.7 hemi or do you find different tunes from different guys?

I'm kind of newish to this, I did tune my GC with the diablo but it was all a one stop shop and hard to get it wrong. I've downloaded a demo of HP before and it's .... intense.

HP vs Diablo is a discussion all on its own, but essentially HP allows you modify anything in the tune whereas Diablo only allows you as the user to change certain parameters. If you don't know what you're doing in HP you can really do damage. I only change things that I know what they do like idle speed, shift points, throttle response, etc.

Some Tuners only use Diablo like Hemifever, and some use both. I only switched to HP because my Trinity almost bricked my PCM.

Also keep in mind after 2015 the PCMs are locked and after 2018 there's a security gateway module to deal with.

I made the 89 to 87 switch 6 months after I bought my truck in 17 and have never looked back. That was back when fuel prices were not what they are today. I'm glad I kept my truck basically stock with a few minor cosmetic upgrades. Lift kits and big tires look cool, but man does that stuff eat up mpg.

No noticable difference in power and maybe 1mpg better with the 89. Towing or not towing, I run 87. Its bee good for over 5yrs now.

Right now I'm running 87. 14l per 100km. Last summer ran 91 and it used 12l per 100km. That's a big difference. I need to see if it's worth it to pay the price of premium or not. Truck Def runs smoother and quieter on 91.

I've used 87 w/10% eth, 88 w/15%eth and 91 no eth.
My 6.4 ran fine on all of it.
I'm running 87 no eth right now and seeing a 2mpg increase, but at $4.65/ gal it's a kick in the sack.
I'd go broke trying to run 91 in it...

I have always run the lowest grade..usually 87 in the trucks I have owned. they run fine. a few times I have run mid grade when towing in high heat. I hardly ever run more than mid grade in either of my harleys and they run fine. paid 4.15 this weekend for 87 while towing to lake and back for weekend of camping. got fleet cards for the main brands a few years ago and got .10 off exxon over the weekend. dont have a fleet but they dont seem to care.

Hello!

With these great gas prices we are experiencing! Has anyone switched to 87 octane from 89. I haven’t yet. I will next fill up! I never thought I would! But this is getting ridiculous!
Take care,
Matt
If you’re running stock, doubt you’ll notice a difference.

Modern vehicles should all be safe to run 87 even if the manufacturer recommends 93, as the knock sensors are very sensitive. Car&Driver just showed that you'll generally experience a mild performance drop, the most extreme in their test being a F-150 w/ its turbo ecoboost engine which I think was 23hp down on 87 octane.

I drive pretty chill 99% of the time, so have been running 87. On our Mercedes that recommends 93, even that one on long trips where you're just light-load cruising on the highway we just run 87 as well with no ill effects.

If towing or you floor it a lot, I'd pony up the extra and get higher octane, especially in the summer. Also, if you rarely drive the vehicle I'd also get higher octane as it should have a longer shelf life (octane decreases with fuel age).
