I don't tow or race (periodically put the hammer down when getting on the interstate in heavier traffic), so I just run 87 conoco top tier. About 40 years ago read an article in Scientific American about the synergistic effects when you mix low & mid octane fuel you end up with a higher octane fuel...(don't kill me...I'm just the messenger!) And regarding the use of non-ethanol, what would be the benefits anyone has experienced??

Yes, I have. I didnt notice any difference in power. But the milage went out the window. We pulled our camper about 200 miles and the milage sucked.

Non ethanol fuel is much more stable, doesn’t eat seals like ethanol. Modern cars designed to handle it. I have very little first hand experience but the chain saw, leaf blower engine crowd won’t run pump gas, only ethanol free. Claim is lots of issues with starting, running, etc on ethanol fuel. All goes away if you run ethanol free fuel.

I've only ever run 87 in all my vehicles, my previous 1500 ran fine towing with it and I never once noticed any kind of knock. I'm also running 87 in my 2500 6.4, towing or not and it runs fine with no knock.

Hello!

With these great gas prices we are experiencing! Has anyone switched to 87 octane from 89. I haven’t yet. I will next fill up! I never thought I would! But this is getting ridiculous!
Take care,
Matt
Matt I'm in a 2500 diesel and for the life of me I can't understand why diesel (far less refined fuel than even regular unleaded) is now in the mid $5.50 per gallon range! This is such bull****! do the math on my fillups on a 32 gal tank! Plus I have to buy Def

Switched? Been burning it since day one. The owners manual says it’s fine. 2016 Ram 1500 Hemi, 4wd, 5.5 foot bed, 3.21 rear end, 97k miles. No Hemi “tick”, no mechanical issues, average about 17-23 mpg, depending on local Vice over the highway with cruise set at 70mph and change.

I’ve written a few of these posts today where I fear someone on the forum will set me ablaze. LOL First, I’m a CA guy so I’m well adapted to paying too much for everything, including fuel. 91 Octane is 6.69 at the nearest chevron. Gotta love Costco But even that is nearing 6 now For 87.

Do the gas rams require 91 Octane? Are they considered high compression engines? If not, then burn what you feel comfortable burning, but I’ve always burnt what the manufacturer recommends.

91 Octane can be pressurized more before combustion vs. 87, so your truck will alter its timing electronically to prevent any pre-ignition or otherwise known as engine knock. Long term, lots of arguments if this will cause any noticeable damage since your timing can auto-adjust. If you don’t have a high compression engine, I don’t think it will ever make a difference.

Others might argue that premium has better detergents etc - I’d rather just dump in my own fuel additive so I know for sure it’s in there. Who really trusts big oil anyway.
5.7 in 1500 requires 87, and recommends 89 for best performance. Per the owners manual.

I. Running 30 octane, yes 30 octane, and it seems to run pretty good. I'm able to get over 600 hp out of it. And we'll over what a hemi can make with minimum changes. Still popping 27.3 miles per gallon by not changing the tuner. And just changing the tips on the injectors and a much larger turbo. Of course it does make a lot of noise at idle.

All of you who run lower octane don’t hear knocking because the pcm pulled timing . Thus reducing power.
Absolutely correct. But so what? Running 87 I lose maybe 10HP? 20? guessing less. Point is, for most of us not regularly towing, etc. it makes no difference in normal day to day driving. I may lose a drag race or two...I can live with that and use the savings to overpay for restaurant food and other overpriced...well, everything!
