This morning I drove to work just fine. Went out to go to lunch but when I tried to start the truck it just clicks and does not turn over. the voltameter reads like its just fine, right in the middle of the gauge. all of the electronics work just fine as well (radio, screen, lights). I got someone to hook up jumper cables and tried to start it but again the same clicking sound happens when I try to start it. Since the same thing happens when hooked up with jumper cables do you think the starter went bad that quick?

Very confused why this would happen with no prior issues at all. Should I take the battery to Autozone to test the battery first before towing to the dealership to replace the starter? what are my options here?

I would think failed battery. Original battery? the AGM battery's in my 17 6.4 and my sons 14 5.7 all failed with no warning, and would not take a jump at about 3.5 years.

Battery is toast.
”Lot Rot” kills a lot of them. I’m living on borrowed time with the OEM battery in my 2016–it owes me nothing.

Could be just a dirty or loose battery connection. Address that before investing in a new battery

Yeah, batteries are funny. My OEM lasted 5+ years and I replaced it going into winter just so I didn't get stranded. For whatever reason that battery was just crap. Constantly draining after the truck sat for a week or two. Swapped it out and I can leave the truck sitting for 4-5 weeks and it fires right up.

Take the cables off the battery and clean the posts with a good brush then put some dielectric grease on it and reconnect. I had a loose ground on my old truck and it caused the same issue but I was able to find it pretty easily in about 10 minutes. I don't know if these truck have a starter solenoid but that could also be causing your non-start issue.

I think your starter is good, your OEM battery is crap, replace it and go from there, you got 5yrs out of that battery.

So, the truck ended up starting the day after my original post after I got another jump and left the cables hooked up for a while. the truck started doing the same thing a couple days ago however trying to jump it didn't work. Hitting the starter didn't work either. I decided to pull the battery and the starter and have them checked at AutoZone. both were completely fine. decided to reinstall both and what do you know... she started right up.

would the starter just be getting hung up somehow? I will most likely replace the starter for good measures since I believe that's what was causing this.

It could have been just a bad (dirty ) connection at starter or battery also pull starter relay in the tipim (fuse) box under the hood and see that contacts are clean as well bad or dirty connections = no start or no charging of the battery

Update on the problem... Turns out that there must be something going wrong with the electronic braking system. when this problem happens a message pops up saying service the electronic braking system and the truck wont start. to remedy this i have to engage the parking brake and then the truck will start. odd problem but does anyone have any suggestions on this?
