from SAE publications...

A higher octane quality fuel used in premium-recommended vehicles has the potential for delivering better acceleration and power. Octane number is a standard measure for the anti-knock quality of a gasoline fuel. A higher octane number fuel can withstand more compression before detonation (or knock). Higher compression ratios directly correlate with engine power and thermodynamic efficiency. Hence engines that are designed for higher octane or premium grade fuels should typically develop higher power by extracting more from the calorific value of the fuel.

Our trucks are tuned for 89, as stated before 87 I had no idea what I was missing. My first tank of 91 and it was night and day, just as highlighted in this SAE article. Once in a while I do 87, and the truck goes right back to being sluggish.

The 6.4's in the HD trucks is lower compression then the 5.7's in the 1500's,and thus gets away with a lower fuel octane rating
OK, now I get it. Same arguments I've seen on every automotive forum I've ever been on. Personally I always just use what the manual says ;)

I've had 3 hemi's ; a 2005, 2019 and 2021.
None have ever spent a day in a service department and none have ever had anything other than 87 octane.
The engine adjusts to a given octane to prevent detonation.
We're not dealing with carburetors and distributors anymore.
When is the last time you checked your timing ?
When gas is $5 bucks a gallon for regular 87, everyone will be buying regular 87.

On the bright side( if there is one) my cousin just filled up my 300 gallon gas barrel at the house today.
I use it for 91 oct exclusively cause there isn't a station in my hometown that sells 91 and it's all I run in my Harley's, General, Skidoo, and Cub Cadet...
I'm paying $4.79 at the pump for 87 no eth. (The stations that do carry 91 are over $5/gal.)
He charged $4.50/gallon for 91 delivered...
It sucked, but less hard than I feared it would...

Hello!

With these great gas prices we are experiencing! Has anyone switched to 87 octane from 89. I haven’t yet. I will next fill up! I never thought I would! But this is getting ridiculous!
Take care,
Matt
I’ve put over 110,000 miles on my 2014 5.7L Hemi (quad cab 4x4 Limited) and used 87 octane exclusively since the day I bought it new. I have had an average of 18mpg consistently with zero negative effects. Also did that on a 2004 Escalade I had and finally sold that after 189,000 miles and it was running perfectly.

At current prices the added 2mpgs that 87 no eth gets me is cost effective.
Here's my math:
$4.39/ gal for 10%
$4.79/ gal for 0%
Extra $.40/gal x 30 gal = $12 per tank
Extra 2mpgs x 30 gal =extra 60 miles per tank or 4gal@$4.79=$19.16/tank
I feel somewhat better now...

90 octane is $5.49 per gallon up here which is what we run in our sleds, thankfully winter is over and I don't have to put gas in them until next season, hopefully the price of gas will have gone down some by then.

@HEMIMANN outside the metro areas in Wisconsin non-ethanol gasoline (OKA "good ol' gas) is at most gas stations
87 octane? Haven't seen any up here except for the Cenex in Hayward.
I fill my 12 gallon gas caddy and use for all my Briggs engines. Need 91 nobody for the 2 strokers per OEM requirement.

try this fuel cleaner, and as a bonus you can see how it will clean piston tops, this was Coreys truck one treatment... 3 vehicles same result..

top of piston, hard to find anything that will clean like this..

View attachment 493406

  • Cleans injectors, carburetors, valve and combustion chamber deposits with a concentrated blend of the most powerful high-temp and low-temp detergents available
  • Cleans all forms of fuel injectors, including GDI
  • Enhances fuel stability; reduces gum and varnish formation
  • Use one bottle per tank for most effective treatment, cleans to nearly 100% efficiency in one treatment
  • Reduces need for octane by up to two points
  • Contains synthetic upper cylinder lubricant
  • Cleans pollution control valves
  • Suitable for use with oxygenated fuel
  • Safe for continual use
  • Same chemistry is also available in 4oz dosage as Complete Fuel System Cleaner - Powersports

Look up PEA detergent for fuel system cleaners, literally the only stuff that works you can buy. The only other one available you need to buy with the gas at shell. Only two products have 25% PEA (same stuff in techron), redline si-1 and amsoil PI, and that is it. Not even techron has the same % as redline or amsoil fuel system cleaner. Sorry bro, did mean to bring facts to your tired snake oil joke, but hey facts are always in fashion?

bringing jokes is always a good idea on Friday, work harder though you can do better.

My three Hemi all run fine on 86 Octane. However, I definitely notice a two or three MPG increase when running 91 octane (actually, it's a 2 or 3 MPG drop when I use 86 octane as I normally run 91 octane). Most of my driving is in hot, dry Southern New Mexico. A cold winter day is 50-degrees and most of the summer is in the 90s with a very few days that hit 100-degrees. I found a recommendation in one of the Owner's Manuals that called for 91 octane so that is what I try to use.

Passed through your area recently and saw the truck stops south of Indianapolis had $4.99. Guess you'll get to find out soon. I'm still buying 91 for the car, though.

Ok, I’m the thread starter of this thread. I just filled up with 87 we’ll see if I get any knocking or pinging!
Take care,
Matt

You won't unless your truck badly needs a tune. Computer will pull timing before you can notice as long as your motor is in good condition, you'll just lose a bit of power and economy. If it's enough to matter to you is a different question.
