Recently had a new rack and pinion installed at a shop. I bought the part from O'Reillys and had it delivered there. It was remanufactured. After driving for a bit it seemed ok. Until I turned my wheel hard when backing up and it rubbed the something inside the wheel well. It will turn 1 1/2 turns to the right and 1 3/4 turns to the left. Turning too far and rubbing, it actually rubs on both front tires. Inside of one, outside of the other. The alignment seems good bc my wheel when straight , tires are evenly straight ahead. The shop said there's really only one way it can go on, and that it's probably rebuilt wrong. Thoughts ? And is it safe to keep driving ?

Most likely it was assembled incorrectly. I’d bet the rack is off by one or more teeth against the pinion gear.

Seems like you should be able to adjust it using tie rods . Turn for turn from side to side oughta straighten it out for you. Or find an alignment shop that knows what their doing .

If it’s wrong……. It’s wrong. I know it’ll be a PITA and bump labor cost, but I’d return it, and have your shop install their parts.

That’s always the gamble when bringing your own parts.

In the long run you’ll be better off.

God forbid your involved in an accident, there will always be that doubt.

If your going to Pay a shop to install something let then buy the parts. 100% on the shop and if the part is bad they warranty the part out with little to no headache to you. Most shops only do a 20% mark up on parts and with their discounts it's almost as much as you just paid for it. Most places will charge you again to preform the work if it's a faulty part since you bought the part.

It could be a tooth off (internally). The thing is ...at straight ahead, does it feel 'tight' or is there a little play? Generally speaking, steering systems are manufactured with a 'crown' at the center so as the steering parts wear over time (at the center), they wear evenly. One tooth off probably isn't going to feel any differently. But I'd probably exchange it for a different one.

Before you return it though, measure your tie rods (when wheels straight ahead), measure side to side in case at some point someone or some shop had adjusted your truck's tie rods further in on one side for whatever reason. And also see if it's hitting on any bottoming stops on both sides at the spindles. Maybe it's your truck that's off (from a previous repair). At least rule it out so you don't get another rack and go through the same thing.
