Does it cost a crap ton of money to name a vehicle?

Saw an article by someone who put the words "Corvette" and "SUV" together when talking about a concept car. I'm not necessarily a Corvette fan, but I know what one is and what it never would be is an SUV. Even if you slapped a Corvette name plate on an SUV and called it a Corvette, it would still be just an SUV. Like reusing Charger on a 4 door sedan. You can call it a Charger, but it should have been called a Coronet or Satellite. A Charger is a 2 door. End of discussion. Same as slapping a Mustang badge on an electric SUV. Call it a Galaxie or a Falcon. It's no Mustang.
Anyway, does it cost millions of dollars to name a car? I'm sure there is some cost involved but is it worth tarnishing an existing model name you already use or own the rights to? Hold a contest if you don't have the creativity on staff to come up with something cool.

So that Mustang EV was designed during the previous administration. Jokes on you.
With so many brands and trademark rights, I'm pretty sure these names are like you said re-purposed to keep costs down.

The cost isn't in registering the name, trademarks are pretty cheap, the cost is in building up brand recognition and getting into the public subconscious where there's a feeling of familiarity even if you aren't sure exactly why. Marketing costs money, and why waste decades of pre-existing marketing. Why do you think "hemi" is so prominent in CDJR vehicle marketing?

The Charger sells pretty well. The market obviously doesn't care about the 'tarnish' of the name being recycled as a 4 door. Mavericks are selling faster than Ford can pump them out. I figure anybody under 40 probably doesn't remember or care about the original Maverick. The Mustang Mach-E is, again, selling faster than Ford can make them. The number of people who care is small and probably not people who were going to buy one anyway.

Companies should do better market research

Chevy found out that they should have studied the Spanish Speaking market, before naming a car NOVA

It sold like hot cakes in the USA
But in Central & South America, they could not sell very many

What does nova mean in Spanish?

not going, do not, not, no, nay

Beretta was another no-go for Chevy, the gun manufacturer wasn't happy with them for that.

Nova is a nuclear star explosion, nothing at all about no go ,not moving .All of that is false information. 80% of what’s on here is 62% accurate.

A commonly repeated urban legend, but an uninformed one. It sold fine in Mexico and Venezuela, there is even a brand of gasoline in Mexico called "Nova" and it also sells fine. Infraestrctura Energetica Nova is a major energy utility in Mexico. Obviously "nova" and any association with 'no va' has not been a hurdle in Mexico.

I'm not fluent, but I get around fine in Spanish speaking countries. You don't say "No va" for your car being broken anyway, you say something like "no funciona"

I live less then 30 miles from the Baja Mexico Border & i would say that more than 1/3 of the people in my town are Mexican.
They were the ones that tell the "Urban Legend"
They all wish they had a Nova now !

And Americans talk about the mystical 100mpg carb that the gov't suppressed. Urban legends aren't limited to any given culture and it certainly doesn't make them true. Just often repeated and they are fun stories or feed into what people want to hear, so regardless of the truth they don't die. Yet sales figures don't support the notion, any more then in the day of incredible advancements in fuel economy no company or inventor has yet to trot out the miraculous invention that would lead them to market dom-i-nation and an end to worries about meeting CAFE standards...

Dom i nation is a banned word here? The swear filter here is ******* ridiculous.

I was caught by this also, until I investigated it more and found it is one of those urban legends. Chevy's car actually sold well and exceeded expectations in Venezuela. And in Spanish and English, Nova can mean the same in astrological terms.

Trademarks ARE cheap, ...until you infringe on one. :p
..and let's not forget the "other" 2 door Charger that also had ...cough... (Shelby) attached to it.

Hey! That Omni based Charger was a fun little car! And Shelby prostituted his name onto any car Dodge paid him to.

Don't look in the English dictionary for the word Nova

Look in the Spanish or Spanglish dictionaries

..............................................

I just read up on the Chevy Nova, they did sell well in Central & South America.
What i also read was that Chevy's 1985 Nova was a Toyota design, what a piece of crap

..............................................

Not the only time GM glued it's badge on a Toyota. Remember the Prizm?

I did forget about that! I test drove a used one in the late 90s. It blew a head gasket on the test drive. I did not buy it...
