What specific oil/filter do you use?
I use/have put in PUP 5W20 and Fram Ultra Synthetic. Other PPL use Redline, RP filters, etc,., it is just easy to get what I need with the Ultra Fram. Dealership does my changes (warranty, and also tire rotation), but I have full 5W20 Synthetic put in by Dealer (branded Mopar, but full PUP 5W20). Keep my warranty good, lol, so I do not have to argue etc in the event of a OMG, LOL. I am considering going up to 5W 30, as the heat here is getting hotter than normal, but also, my truck is my DD when I drive and a GG and Hay hauler, but mostly a driveway Princess. Just getting ready to turn 20K on Odometer.

ADDED: Burn2K, This is just what I do, check the oil thread/filter thread by Burla and make your own informed decision. But I also change early at 5K, and I know I can go further, but this is just what dis BOIRD does, guess just personally works and keep tailfeathers outta gutter, hee hee. MC is what I use for as many runs as I can to town to keep mileage down on the RAM. Use RAM for big trips like getting Hossie food and such.

Awesome thanks for the specifics. I have a 2012 Ram 5.7 Outdoorsman picked up for a really good deal it has a reman Jasper. I just did a oil change in it(I like to do right away after a purchase regardless). I used 5w20 Castrol Edge Full Synthetic and also a Fram Ultra Synthetic filter(for same as you readily aval). I also added 16oz of Lubegard Bio Tech, more as a precautionary measure. Especially after reading all of the liter issue threads. I do not want to have issue in near future so figure if I can get the maintenance right with the right lube I will have a higher chance at prevention. And yes I have read the oil/filter thread is very good information in there. I just ordered a blackstone labs kit so I can see where I am at. Considering going PUP 5w30 next change it is also warm here now as well.

Hey Guys!

Quick question, With Covid I ended up working from home and HARDLY drove my truck. I got 1000Kms on the oil in my truck. Its synthetic oil, looks clean, when I check my dash it tells me the oil is still at 83%

my question is even if I don't put any miles on it after a certain amount of time will it tell me it's time to change the oil, or does it go ONLY by milage.

Thanks guys!
Not sure how old your truck is. Bus according to the model year your owner's manual will say either 6 months or a year

5,000 miles or 1 year.

Hemi valve lifter lubrication issue demands it - system is not robustly-designed, intolerant of contamination interfering with oil flow.

These other old guys saying 1 year are probably like me - the combination of retirement and global pandemic knocked our miles way, way down.

I never change oil unless oil analysis recommends it.
I use a Gulf Coast Filters 1 micron bypass oil filter set up.
I have a 2001 7.3 Ford Powerstroke with over 360,000 miles with no oil changes since 30,000 miles. Engine has never been touched.
I have a 2004 Freightliner Classic XL with 1.4 million miles with no problems.
Synthetic oil does not start lubricating at its peak potential until it has at least 10,000 miles on it according to the engineers at Royal Purple.

Bypass oil filtration is the only way to achieve this.

Oil, even mineral oil, never wears out.
It gets dirty and looses its additive package.

My filter keeps the oil chemically clean.
Changing the filter and adding make up oil restores the additive package.

I also put 1,125,000 miles on an N14 Cummins with the same filter using Standard Rotella oil.

Changed 3 injectors and a head gasket in all that time.

Also note that I changed filters based on mileage ran and ALWAYS pulled a sample for lab analysis.
Sounds like you're getting good performance from your oil. The only concern I would have is when you just replace the filter & add back the oil that you lost changing the filter, at best You're only getting maybe 1/7 of the additive package refreshed ( if that since the stock filter in our hemi's hold about 1/4 quart at best so you're only getting 1/28 th of the additives you need when just replacing the filter).

If under the milage due for an oil change but over a year, you would think the app would tell you on the health check report?

This change the oil by date is nuts. Leave a quart of oil on a shelf for 3 years. What happens to it. Absolutely nothing. Same applies to oil in a crankcase. Unless it is getting a bunch of condensation in it, oil does not break down just sitting there. People get sold a ton of horn swaggle that if u actually think about it makes no logical sense.

OTOH, a yearly oil change is cheap insurance against the all those unknown variables and cheaper than sending the oil off for testing. I change the oil in my zero-turn every year even though it runs < 15 hrs vs the recommended 100 hr change period. Same with our Generac, yearly whether it needs it or not. Location matters too, the majority of our Gulf Coast days are 90+ humidity...

Lesser hydro-saturated oil (lesser synthetic) has an oxidation shelf life. Google it.

How many YEARS would a vehicle have to sit unused for the oil in it to go bad.
I believe the same as Dean2. It doesn't go bad you're just being told that by the oil manufacturers.
I have a car that has the same oil in it since I retired in 2014. It gets driven less than 100 miles a years and it still looks the same.

It's just a ****** I bought when I had to commute 160 miles a day 5 days a week. It didn't take long to rack up almost 300k miles. Since I retired it mostly sits. I drive it to the store once in a while just to keep the battery charged up.
Wow I didn't realize we can't use the word b e @ t e r

As they say,you can storage the oil up to 5 years in the jug.

What happens to it after that time period? Is it no longer oil?
There is a general consensus of terminology coming from the oil companies that unused, unopened, and stored in its original container out of extremes of temperature, motor oil will last for an “extended period”. They then go on to suggest that the oil shouldn’t be used after a few years; the exact period varying between 2 years (according to Total) up to 5 years (Mobil).

So whilst motor oil manufacturers say we should responsibly dispose of oil after a few years they all stop short of saying that the oil does actually expire. Clearly, there is a vested interest in their future sales here so to get to the truth about oil we need to drill down deeper.

I do not know anybody who keep oil in storage longer then 2 years, including my self, when I buy oil on sale, the longest time I keep it was 2.5 years, and was gone,so I do not have any experience with oil older then 2 .5 years.

I'm just about to finish up a 55 gallon drum of Royal Purple I bought through my workplace about 20 years ago. There's so little left I've been using it in my air compressor...
