$2000 seems like cheap insurance to me. Dealer seems to be doing the right thing.

With only the few miles you have any honest dealer would work something with you. Something just seems so wrong here. My experience is if there are 100 used trucks and everyone is great but two, Somehow I wind up with one of the two. So I bought new with a warranty. I have been bit a few times and never again. I know we have to buy with a budget in mind. If I were you I would look for a low mileage engine from some place that has a very good reputation. A crate engine can easily exceed $6K by the time it's put in, A solid good used can save you half of a crate.
But for sure before you do anything go back to the place you bought it, maybe they will at the very least pay half. Never hurts to ask.

Virtually every reman motor I’ve come across, with the exception of those done by the manufacturer themselves, I’ve had to open up and fix what some so call “professional builder” built.

The dealer I bought this truck managed the lease on the truck when it was new for 2 years, and then sold it as Chrysler certified to the second owner, who used the same dealer to do all the maintenance. They sold it to me as dealer certified, and it was a bit more used than what they would normally keep, so I am sure they thought it was a solid vehicle. I'm not sure if that means they should have caught this issue or not. At the time, its service record meant quite a bit to me as a buyer. But, that's the deal with mechanical things, you never know for sure exactly when they are going to break. I just want to figure out how to get it running reliably again, without breaking the bank anymore than its broken.
I wonder if previous owner knew, loaded it up with STP before trading- dealer does oil change and then… wham?!

Just too coincidental, IMO. I suppose it could be possible, but something JDLR here.

I had the same issue with one of my cars, never on my truck. But all I did was replace the coil pack for those two plugs and it was fine. Might be different with a truck

I just went thru the lifter problem on my 2013. Do not go with used! What happens is the barring on the lifter sises up. It then wears thru the cam. Destroying both. Mine went from running normal to bad in a week based on my gas mileage and engine light. It was on my dime so I had the heads pulled and serviced.

So, it looks like we are finally moving forward, and have found a Chrysler reman engine to put back in. I do have one question though. I have seen a great deal of chatter about replacing the standard oil pump with the one from the Hellcat. However, I have yet to see anyone actually do that and writ about driving the vehicle for 50 - 100,000 miles. Any longterm reviews or recommendations from the mechanics in the crowd? Second, is this something that's common enough the Chrysler techs would be willing to do for me if I bought the oil pump?

Dang, sounds like your truck did basically the same thing mine did. Started making some noise and then check engine light. I would definitely have pursued that route if it was off warranty.

While I wouldnt expect a reman or new engine, I might expect replacement parts. Like if it was cam/lifters, I might expect they would replace those. The price difference between a cam job and pulling an engine and installing a used engine has to be negligible. It's a choice there, but if I was that dealer and I cared about my reputation, I'd opt to fix those parts. Putting used engines into used vehicles is a pig and a poke just like buying used trucks, you never know what you are gonna get.
THIs is exactly why I never buy used, if I buy, I buy new off the lot (also why I have an extended 8 year warranty on truck also), BUT that is just me, and I's a BOIRD...

I'd go for the reman engine and be more comfortable that my new engine will have many miles ahead of it. While the 5.7 does have issues like this, engines, even old skool engines went bad under 100K. You really don't know how the prior owner treated the engine even with dealer service records. I have a 5.7 with 105K on the clock with now issues, but I do have the oil analyzed after oil changes.

Just wanted to thank ya'll for your advice. I ponied up with the extra dough, and luckily had a good service manager who was extremely helpful in working with the warranty company, dealership I bought the truck from, and sourcing parts (new engines are apparently in short supply). Hopefully, I have a great engine that with proactive care and maintenance that I know I can give it, it will run for a long time.

Cheers!!
Ira
