You are in limp mode.. go straight to the dealer and get an assessment, if they say we've ordered parts and you can drive it until they come in .. don't. They did that to me twice and twice my tranny was toast after and had to be replaced

Do a search on this site. Lots of info here. Common issue is the valve body. Unlike the above I would avoid going to a dealer as lots of them are liars or incompetent, unless you know of a reputable one . An independent mechanic recommended by friends or family if you have to go that direction.

You are right .. it's not on warranty so find a good tranny shop. That's what I did but due to parts hard to get my truck is still at the tranny shop.

I had the codes pulled and it said shift solenoid malfunction I believe. PO755 was the code. Looks like a trip to the tranny shop is in my future....... 70 thousand miles and already needs trans work.

Depending on what you do with that truck, and being that it's a 2014 with 70k miles (I've got more miles on my 2017), and that Ram isn't particularly known for its transmissions...it's not terribly surprising. It sounds like this truck sits a lot, and if you've got debris floating around in your trans from dust intrusion or just simple wear, it's going to start to settle out any time the fluid isn't moving, and build up throughout the lines. If it builds up enough inside the valve body it's going to put you in limp mode.

Transmissions today aren't like the automatics of yesteryear. The tolerances are so tightened down that any little bit of anything in there that isn't supposed to be can wipe out a valve body. Years ago you could almost have rocks floating around in there and stuff would keep working.

A bad solenoid doesn't mean you need a rebuild. They are known to go bad. Pretty easy to replace

Yes they are and if you are mechanically inclined enough to change your trans fluid then changing the solenoid is simple to do. I would recommend upgrading the valvebody while in there since it has to come down anyway to get to the solenoid and they are problematic.

I can switch them out but if it's not the problem then I've burned 800 bucks. I talked to the trans shop he is going to look at it. I drive the truck every day but I live 5 miles from where I work. So it doesn't go real far anymore. I'm going to end up selling it at some point as I have a work pickup I drive everyday also.

I agree with you. Find out what it is then go from there. I wouldn’t want to drop that kind of money on it and not be the problem. Good luck with it and hope it’s something simple.

Does it go into 2nd upon manually shifting into 2nd?
When mine was in limp mode manually shifting had no effect.... just first to fourth. IIRC, the manual shift button did nothing.

My transmission was doing the same thing this past winter. I was thinking it could be the trans solenoid, but the dealer diagnosed the issue to be coming from the valve body. That was replaced by the dealer under warranty. That was not the fix either. The next code was low line pressure along with improper gear ratio in 5th and 6th gears. I had to pay for the new line pressure sensor. That was not the fix either. My transmission started chirping when it down shifted under a load. Then I was told the transmission was shot.

New 66rfe transmissions are backordered about 10-11 months right now. I was able to get a reman. a lot sooner. I was also able to work with my warranty company to get a built transmission by just paying for the cost difference for the parts. So, I was happy to pay the additional $1660 for every single component to be upgraded. My new (rebuilt) tranny just showed up to the dealership yesterday. I hope to have the truck sometime next week.

Good luck with yours. If you have any codes stating improper gear ratio, it’s probably toast and will need to be rebuilt.

I just got my truck back on 7/11/2022. I have about 220 miles on it so far. It seems to be shifting well. It seems to hold the gears better with solid shifting when it needs to. I have NOT experienced the transmission “shudder” yet either.

I’m going to bring my travel trailer home tonight so I’ll get some short towing experience today.

And get a shift kit.. the one that comes with the stiffening plate to replace the weak warped one

The way I was able to really test my 66rfe (and how I could tell it was failing both times) was with a moderate to hard acceleration through second gear and into third. The gear spacing and way that tranny is setup makes it hold second for a long time under heavy acceleration and when things were going out it would feel like it over-ran (for lack of a better term) the truck after shifting into third. Basically, the tranny would shift but it felt like the truck didn't get the message and it would clunk. It could just be my truck but it was the same both times. This is also what put it into "limp mode". I'd probably give it a bit to break in before hammering too hard but give that a try and see how smooth it feels.

I pulled my travel trailer about 750 miles this weekend. The truck drove and shifted very well. I got about 8.5-9 mpg’s as well. Trailer is about 7500lbs and 32’ overall.
