What in 2023 is going to be interesting? Going to need a new truck.

I've been reliably informed that my truck is going to be stolen next year. The suspect is my son and the accomplice is my wife. So I *may* have once said my son could have my truck when I bought something new. I was temporarily insane. I was drunk. I was sleep deprived. The sun was in my eyes. My medication wasn't properly regulated. It was my evil twin. All of these have fallen on deaf ears and I'm being "highly encouraged" by my wife to buy a new truck next year and pass the truck along. I haven't tried crying yet. Do you think I should try crying?

No idea WTF to buy. I could spend $80k, but would prefer to keep it closer to $60k. Preference for new, but would consider the right used truck. I've no brand loyalty but have a very strong preference for domestics. I would consider a Toyota, hypothetically, but am not sure I would actually buy one. Can't think of another foreign brand I'd consider.

I'm going to wait for the 2023 order banks to open and start playing with build n price more, I guess, and start doing test drives of candidates. I'm joking, but only kind of, when I say maybe I'll just offer to buy my truck back from my son...

I wonder if you'll actually be able to buy a Ranger Raptor or if it'll be another Bronco situation. I've not driven even test driven a new truck since the first year of the 5th gen Ram.

How often does your wife(or any wife) preemptively offer her blessing on such a high level purchase? Don't waste time trying to think of the answer. Why you haven't already ordered a Delmonico Red T-RX is baffling to me.

When my 2016 Ram 1500 Bighorn 3.0 eco-diesel breaks to the point that it will cost more than i want to pay, or when i decide to stop running a business.

My decision will be another Ram Classic
or
I could order something like this

& set a 1956 Chevy 1/2 ton body on it

I don't think I want a TRX. My goal is something I can drive cross country and do moderate off roading once I get there. The ability to do something like Fins N Things but also park in downtown St. Louis. I think I'd get tired of feeding the TRX as well. WTF did they not put a bigger tank in something that gets such low fuel economy? The Raptor (which I know isn't nearly as fast, but is about the only competitor) gets roughly 50% better fuel economy and comes standard with a 36 gallon tank.

All that said, especially if I sold my Camaro I could swing one. There's some reasonable deals on ordering one. I ought to at least go drive a Power Wagon as well. I'm considering both full size and mid size trucks.

Couldn't find a Power Wagon to drive yet.

Drove a Gladiator. Meh.

Drove a F-150 Raptor. I liked it. Not sure I liked it enough to buy it, but I liked it.

Looked at a Colorado ZR2. Interior was so bad and seat so terrible I didn't even drive it. GM sure knows how to suck at interiors.

I need to find a Tremor and a Rebel. Absolutely zero "back country" package 1500s anywhere remotely close to me.

If I was to suggest I would go with your last 2 mentioned.

I would test drive the F150 Tremor and then go buy the Rebel.

Lol.

I hate the thought of buying a different truck. The price skyrocketed on them.

I just pray my ole 4th Gen does not take a hit by some distracted driver and that i can still get parts for the 2nd and 3rd Gen.

It's fun to speculate, I'd love to be in your position to be honest lol.

Problem is, every truck is a compromise one way or the other and it's just a matter of picking the pros and cons. I'd love a diesel for towing; either 5th gen + ED, or the 2022 GM 3.0 duramax (the 2022 interiors are much better, on par with Ram now). But then I'd be getting pretty much what I have now, same pros + and cons when it comes to "what can you do with the truck".

I've thought about the little GMC Canyon with the I4 diesel. Pros' (compared to my truck) are small, nimble, stunning fuel economy. Con's, far less payload (lose a couple hundred) and would have to probably downsize my trailer though on paper the Canyon could technically pull it.

Next option is heavy duty; I'd pass on the Ram 2500 because I cant afford the cummins and I don't want to risk another hemi. So I'd probably swing for the F350 with the 7.3 and then dump a truck camper on the back. Pros, can pull all the things, cons, mpg and ride. Oof.

Lots of nice choices out there, for me anyway.

If you really want to blow the budget check out a legacy powerwagon.https://www.legacyclassictrucks.com/p-34987-legacy-power-wagon-conversion.html you have time to get it built.

Another option, keep your truck get him a Colorado or Tacoma type vehicle.

Have you driven one? I was instantly uncomfortable. Worst interior I've seen so far. No way I would consider it after seeing it in person and sitting in it. I would have paid the salesmen $20 to let me not take it out for a test drive.

Yeah, that would blow the budget. Especially once you figure in 1/2 of everything I had left and an attorney. :D

I'm more comfortable at $60k. I could stretch to $80k but would have to finance some of it or sell some stocks I don't want to sell. I still want to be able to retire early.

It's been about 6 years and well before my time with my Ram so maybe I can't go back at this point, but yes I did. I think it was the Denali trim, I didn't find it bad (at the time anyway), and certainly no worse than any other midsize interior.

The refresh is on the way for 2023, spy shots are out there, apparently the new interior is much like the new 2022 GM half tons. The big problem with the refresh is they're dropping the diesel and the only engine will be the 2.7 turbo 4 banger from the half ton. But that engine makes like 430 lb/ft of torque, more than our hemi lol. It should do very well in a small truck considering it puts the 5.3 to shame in their half ton. But MPG is probably signifcantly worse yet than the old 2.8 duramax and MPG is half the reason I'd want a smaller truck.

Sounds like a Ram Rebel with the EcoDiesel might fit the bill

For the OP/Docwagon? Possibly yes, for me I wouldn't get a rebel because they don't tow as well (softer suspension) and I don't like the black drooping "monopoly man moustache" that they call a grill :)

I'd look at the Ranger Tremor or Tacoma TRDPro. It'll fit better in the city, as well as, trails when you hit the dirt. Unless you actually need a full size truck for the space, then I'd be looking at a Rebel or maybe a Raptor. The Raptor is a wide truck though lol.

To me it sounds like new 1500 ram in whatever trim you like best in budget. You seem pretty attached to the one you have now so a new version of the same with a couple extra options to spoil yourself may be you're best bet.I still don't consider the rebel an off roader any more than any other trim that doesn't have the 22s just because it sits a whole inch higher and more aggressive looking trim. The drivetrain is the same and a set of bilsteins isn't much in the grand scheme if the extra height is desired. With all these trucks sitting so long waiting on chips though and truck shortages in general I wouldn't want to buy a new truck right now. If the chip issue gets resolved the market will be flooded with trucks and with high gas prices I think the higher trims will be less desired as people downsize personal vehicles. Lower trim will always sell as work vehicles.
