After changing my oil (that filter is a pain!) I noticed this sitting in the front shock. I was able to pull it out... What in the world could have caused that?

Wait, I don't see a split in it. How did you get it off of the shaft?
If it isn't split, then someone had to have installed it incorrectly OR
Does the strut still have the nut on it and secure at the top?
Has your truck had something done to the front suspension, the sway bar link looks different. Also the OEM bumper is a yellow/white material not black - at least on mine.

Looks the the whole strut top assembly failed as the dust boot is also no longer held up. May want to get in a bit closer before driving and look in there. May have a bigger problem. Are those rancho quick lifts? I see the red lower spring seat.

Also looks like the top of the strut isn't centered in the "cup" part of the mount.
