Does anybody know of a way to figure out how much is needed to clear a given tire diameter? I have a ‘22 Power Wagon, AEV Katla 17x10 wheels, and 12.5x37 Nitto Terra Grapler G2s. On the stock truck, they hit the lower outer corner of the wheel well, that small piece of plastic trim. I don’t want to buy and instal a lift only to find that it’s not enough, I also don’t want too much lift. How can I determine the right amount of lift? Thanks!

Thuren's site has good info on this

At 57mm, the stock wheel setup for the 2013+ 3500 and 2014+ 2500 will require a +18 to +25 millimeter offset range in order to achieve proper fitment. The same goes for the Power Wagon which in stock form has a +42 to +57 millimeter wheel offset.

The +18mm to +25mm offset will give the best overall clearance for tire and wheel combinations once you install a 0 - 3 inch lift. The above-mentioned platforms clear stock tire setups better than the Pre-2013 models. Most trucks come from the dealer with 34 inch diameter tire sizes, therefore fitting 35 inch tires are out of the question...mostly.

A 35 x 12.5 tire size wrapped around stock rims will fit but will also rub on the radius arms. The same goes for a 37 x 12.5 inch tire size on a stock setup; however, it’s guaranteed that the turning radius will suffer dramatically coupled with rubbing on the sway bar and radius arm.

Applying a +18mm offset to a set of aftermarket wheels and a 37 x 12.5 inch tire diameter fits nicely with zero contact on the radius arm or sway bar. If it rubs at all through the vertical range of motion it’ll be very slight.

We can assist you with getting a level or lift. Message me if you would like some info and a quote on anything

Your issue is you went with the 10” wide wheels.

Your best bet is to just trim the plastic as needed. With those wheels, you might need to hammer over some of the metal as well.

Also if the offset is to much you'll hit the pinch weld at the bottom of the fender on the inside, it's covered by plastic and most just bend it over after cutting the plastic out. I have a HD gas with no lift and fit both stock rim 35 x 12.50 Toyo's (rub full lock under load on sway bar) and BlackRocks 4.5" offset on 35 x 12.50 and rubbed on the pinch weld.. I to have not got a lift yet because not sure what way to go but am looking at Thuren or AEV .. when I go to 37's

True! I’m jumped the gun there, should have gone with their 8.5” wide. I’m in “damage control” now as I am having trouble selling the ones I have in order to buy the 8.5” wide.

The offset of the AEV Katla 17x10 is -15.6 it widens the stance well, but with the 37” Nittos, they hit that plastic piece you mentioned. I took it off and they hit the pinch weld. It seems that it only needs a minimal lift to clear, but I don’t know exactly how much. I don’t want to lift it too much.

These pictures are from the “tire size fitment” app. It compares the stock tire/rim with the bigger ones I am trying to run. NOTE: the units are inches, not mm, that’s a bug.

I'm with you on that.. I don't want to lift unless it's required.. so look at a bolt on swing arm bracket (can't remember it's name, think I saw at Carli suspension) bolts to frame with swing arm to it moving the suspension ahead a bit for that clearance.. but for me to do this I would have to change my bumper so the tire doesn't hit it.

The carli radius arm drop bracket just drops the frame side of the arm, i dont think it moves it forward at all. The aev one does move it forward, and i think synergy has a kit that drops and moves it forward as well.

Thanks for the correction.. after I said it .. went looking and couldn't find it.. but also noticed it's for correction of spring arc from a lift.

I’ve ordered the 8.5” wide katlas, the procal snap is also back in stock so I’ve got ones of those on order as well. The 10” Katlas will be up for sale soon if anybody within reach of Savannah GA is interested.

We’ve got thunderstorms at the moment, but I do plan on taking some pictures to show the differences between the 10” and the 8.5”. It’s not just the width, the offset is also drastically different. The 10” is -15.6 and the 8.5 is +27.

Yes. I would love to see the difference between the two.

The 8.5” wides are no doubt the better width/offset for stock fenders and 37’s. The 10” wide ones were designed around the cut fenders and 40’s.

So here’s the verdict…
Stock wheel/tire, it sits just inward of the fender flare.

Here is the 17x10 with the 12.5x37. It pokes out maybe 2” from the fender flare and hits the lower corner of the wheel well.

And the Goldilocks moment.
17x8.5 with the same 12.5x37. Pokes out just flush with the fender flare and no contact at all during full range of motion.
