@mikeru Have a question Mike. My first ever Ram 1500 with the 5.7L no-e is waiting to be built. Owning a GM car with the 4 cyl deactivation I've learned to hate that chit. To much shaking, and stuttering from the engine. I have a Range Technology MDS eliminator plugged into the OBD port to stop that, and it's great. So, I'm guessing I'm not going to like it in the 5.7 either. With that said my question is, will pushing the + button on the gear selector while the tranny is in 8th gear allow the tranny to change all the up to 8th as you drive, and stop the cylinder deactivation crap?

Range doesn't have a disabler for the 5.7L at this point. I have emailed then to see if they are working on one. I'll update when I hear from them.
To clarify what I said before. If you press the minus button while in 8th gear, You'll see a number come up in the gauge cluster display showing which gear the trans is limited to (8). When 8 is displayed the transmission will shift through all gears normally, but MDS will be disabled. If you aren't yet in 8th, but you are in D, press the minus button, then press the plus button until the gear indicator in the gauge cluster screen displays "8". The displayed number indicates the highest gear the transmission will shift into. Pressing the plus button when "8" is displayed will re-enable MDS. This little ritual will need to be repeated every time you shift into D to keep MDS inactive.

And unfortunately no one makes a device like you had on your GM. If it's any consolation to you, I owned two GM trucks with cylinder deactivation, and Ram's MDS seems to be much less noticeable than the version GM uses. But if you upgrade to a louder exhaust it will be more noticeable when the engine goes into 4 cylinder mode.

Thanks Mike, that answered my question. If it's like my GM car there's not much difference in the mpg's with that stuff turned off. Color me old school, and I know technology has passed me by, but it just doesn't seem healthy to run an 8 cylinder engine with only 4 cylinders firing. However, I'm happy to hear the MDS is much better than the GM craziness.

It may be less noticeable than what GM has, but I still disable MDS.
And like you I agree that any fuel savings when keeping it active is negligible for my commute. I prefer to keep all 8 banging away.

Hi Guys, well I read all of your replys and yes I was not thinking when I bought this Ram, it was so beautiful I just had to have it. So I looked at some new Chevys but now that I have driven the new Ram It rides better, quiet, and so comfrotable ,so I went on a long drive by my self and got to know the truck
and put it in tow mode ,WOW what a big difference in sound and power. So
after a very long drive and a good talk with myself I really like the Ram over the Chevy, which surprizes me, but being old and dumb now, turns out I'm glad I bought the 2022 Ram, Black on Black, and feels good to drive it. I love it.!!
Thanks for all the tips, and I told the Docs at the VA, no more cutting on me,
no more tests,no more drugs, what ever happens is meant to be and I,m ready for anything. Have agreat 4TH everyone.

I don't have a new one, mine is a 14 with the 8 speed and 3.9 gears, I can't really tell when the mds is on or off , when driving, unless my window is down , putting around in town,
On the high way , can't tell at all.
I great great mileage, I will turn it off when cold in winter till the motor is warmed up, it can get -30 here often.
BTW, will be 80 next bd. but still put my foot into it a bit. No cancer ,but heart is poor.

Howdy and SEMPER FI, Thank you for your Service, My Dad served 24 years in the Navy, I served 20. I survived cancer in my throat 9 years ago 7 hours on the table and Desert Storm before that. To damn ornery to let it go. I bought a 2019 used with all of those gadgets also. I just let it do its thing and keep the oil changed. Have found out about a few bugs here and there. Technology always will bite us in the ass at times. Marine, Keep plugging away and do not let anything get ya down. We have been through some **** that only a hand full in here could even relate to. In my prayers and thoughts Brother. MR1 (SW) U.S. Navy Retired

The newer GM V8 engines all have MDS also (though it is called something else), so you are in the same boat if you went GM.

I don't find the RAM MDS objectionable in stock trim - like mike said though, if you put a loud exhaust on it then it becomes noticeable.

Unfortunately, your truck came without all of those extra toys because it just wasn't optioned out high enough. A higher level of trim RAM would have given you all of those things that you miss.

Glad your starting to like the truck.

Wish you well and there comes a point in life to where you have to ask yourself. Do I enjoy what time I have left or be miserable to just have a bit more time.

Have a great 4th ! and wishing you well with everything.

DRIVE it, maintain it and enjoy it. TY for your service. One of my friends is a NAM grunt, he was an 11B (Infantry) 1st tour, s n i p e r 2nd tour, where unfortunately, he took some agent orange and some agent green also (for those not know, There was Agent Orange wasn't the only agent used, Agent Orange just widely publicized), and it has caused him a lot of issues to the point of being in a wheel chair now. BUT I know, even now, go to a range, he would outshoot me with a rifle even now. Keep trucking grunt, TC and be safe, and ENJOY dat truck.

ADDED: The U.S. had a rainbow of chemicals at their disposal. They were nicknamed according to the color on the barrels in which they were shipped. (Agent Orange didn’t appear orange, though it looked like that to Pilsch.) Once Operation Ranch Hand began, around 20 million gallons of Agents Green, Pink, Purple, Blue, White, Orange, Orange II, Orange III, and Super Orange were sprayed over South Vietnam. The chemicals were produced by companies like DOW Chemical, Monsanto, and Hercules, Inc.

Thank you, I was 11 Bravo also, and my cancer is from A/O, we called it Whie Rain ,as when it fell on us it felt cool to the skin, and we had no worries as we were told it was safe !! My big Brother "Gary" was in Vietnam with me, he was a "Door Gunner" on a Huey, and it killed him, he was KIA Oct 7, 1967 I was
down South of him at the time, they found me a week later and sent me home 30 days early from my tour. I hated Vietnam and I hate it more now.
You tell your friend "WELCOME HOME," from another Grunt.
Thank you
Ron, 4INF.DIV.

Agree with most of the sentiment expressed -- enjoy (the best U can) what time U have. Everyday is a gift -- depending on your attitude.

Thank You for your service. I always said if I had been 5 - 10 years older, I would never have gone to NAM. Having seen what ******** stuff politicians can come up with...

ESPECIALLY NOW DAYS... With the advice given earlier, You would never know what you were climbing into bed with!

I use the word never cautiously because never is a long time. I will never own another Ram with MDS. It's an absolute pain in the a$$ to me. Yeah I can use manual shift and that stops it but not something I should have to do every time I put the truck in the drive. If MDS actually made a difference in fuel mileage I might have more patience with it but doesn't whatsoever. So it's absolutely useless and super annoying. At least in my opinion.

I've had mine 3 years and mds hasnt bothered me once or even been something I think about when driving or towing. every now and then I see the ECO green light on but not sure what is bad about it. my laramie runs great tows good and gets 20+ sometimes on the highway. I'm not sure what it is about the mds that folks are supposed to not like.

And you bought the truck anyway. Sounds like you should do a better job of negotiating and test driving. You cannot turn off the MDS. Period. You can disable it by putting the truck in high gear manually. Do not use the Tow Mode or you'll make worse your already crappy gas mileage. Pay attention next time.

Why. Not one thing wrong with MDS, it is all in your damn head! Guess you hit it one to many times.

I turn off mds every chance I get. We went from St. Louis to gulf shores last month. I left mds on for the trip down and turned it off coming home. Actually got .2 mpg better without it. I have a magnaflow muffler on it and when it switches from 8 to 4 cylinder mode it sounds like a lawn tractor. Ugh
Did you have to reprogram the ECM to tell it that you had a free-flowing muffler?

We have a 2018 Yukon with the Range device that goes in the OBD port.
It works great, I think it has helped mileage around .5 mpg.
It would be great if Range made one for the Hemi.

You don't have to understand what people don't like about MDS. You like it, then by all means keep it active. Other's don't like it for their own reasons. I think it's a good thing that it can be disabled, even though it's a little bit of an inconvenience to have to do it every time you shift into drive.

@Namgrunt67, using tow/haul will disable MDS, but using tow/haul mode will negatively affect your fuel economy. Using the shift limit buttons allows the transmission to use the normal shift points, so any potential fuel economy hit will only be from the slight difference MDS might give. Although, after many years of owning Ram trucks with MDS, and lots of experimenting, I've never seen any real benefits from MDS. Which is why I disable it now. If for no other reason than that the exhaust sounds like crap when it's running on 4 cylinders.
