I just recently picked up a 2014 1500, it has 160,000kms on it and I just got back from a 1,300km road trip. On my way back home the gas cap light came on and it will not go alway. I have made sure the gas cap is closed properly but it is still there. No check engine light or anything, as soon as I start the truck the little message pops up saying gas cap open or whatever it says. I don’t seem to be losing any fuel mileage, I’m getting about 700kms a tank highway. Any ideas where to start looking?

The warning can be reset. If it happens again….. time for next cap.

My understanding is with a scan tool. Had my mechanic reset mine quite some time ago.

Not sure if battery disconnect would work…… but hey, why not try :waytogo:

It came back I can hear a ticking coming from the tank while the truck is running so I’m guessing somewhere under there the Evap system is leaking some air. I just haven’t had time to go find it yet

Forget the cap for now ...............

It is very seldom the problem, just like a split hose seldom splits for maybe 12 years

I would almost bet that it is one of two things
EVAP PURGE SOLENOID

I replaced the charcoal canister and the purge solenoid AND the detection pump.

Same issue with my '14 RAM.
Got the gas cap light. Meh, figure it is 8 years old probably worn out. Replace it same issue except now I've got he major evap leak code. Replace the sensor/valve assy on the gas tank. Clear the codes, week later throws code again. Only thing left is the purge valve assy under the hood. Replaced it last week. I still have the gas cap light but no MIL light or code. IF it does it again I've got a leak in the evap system somewhere, likely a fractured plastic line.

Another thing. I was smelling gas fumes but after replacing the valve/sensor assy on the tank, that stopped but was still getting a code.

So where else in the system is the leak located. The vacuum hose to the purge valve solenoid back the the fuel tank?

i ended up finding the issue. I fully dropped the tank, built a homemade smoke machine and ran it through the tank. The little plastic piece that is moulded into the tank that vents had 4 holes all around it, plus the EVAP canister had a broken line on it. Unfortunately you can’t replace the moulded plastic piece without buying a new tank, so I plastic JB welded the hell out of it and replaced the line and it has been fixed ever since!
