yes I have Car Shield as well, American Auto Shield is the underwriter and the first time around my truck was laid up for two months before I finally settled with them. The cost of lifters and cam was $4700, on advice from the Ram service manager I tried to get AAS to put in a remanufactured engine, I offered to pay the difference but they refused. So now, 6000 mi later, I have to try to get them to do this all over again.

Well got the truck back yesterday just to take it back today, new engine but some how the tech failed to install a new intake even though I was charged for one on top of an exhaust leak that wasn't there before and a scratched up bumper.
So now I have to wait for the intake to be installed after it get back from the body shop...FYI if your offered a warranty from a used car lot take it,it saved my ass
Ended up being a $12K job

I think it's just cheap Chinese lifters
If my mind serves me correctly I think I read that 75% of these truck parts are from china

Glad to hear it worked out!

I think I’m in the same boat. 110k miles owned since 27k - pup 5w20 fram xg10060 changed every 5k the entire time I’ve had it. Now I have lifter tick on the drivers side.

Going to send an oil sample out to Blackstone (thanks @Lee Peterson) to see what’s in there.

Guess it’s time for a hellcat oil pump (with 50psi spring), maybe a new cam, newest lifters, etc. might as well do the water pump, t-stat, tensioner, pushrods? while I’m in there.

Will be switching to m1 fs 0w40 and rp 20/820 (if I can find one) or 20-500 filter after tons of reading on this forum. I just can’t rationalize the cost for redline.

Ty @Burla @HEMIMANN for your contributions.

Taking it to the dealer on Thursday for them to confirm - I’m sure they’ll tell me cam and lifters etc and nothing will be covered.

We're all (Hemi engines) in the same boat - we try to help each other.

The Cummins guys got their own problems (& now ecodiesel too) with crappy Bosch CP4 fuel transfer pumps hatching - wipes out the entire engine as well. They've been strung along for years too while Bosch makes enough of the previous CP3 pumps to replace all the CP4's.

@HEMIMANN I’m debating even taking the truck into the dealer now, knowing they’re just going to charge me for diagnosis and I’m not going to have them do the work.

I know if the cam is toast I can watch the valve train with the covers off and not see a valve move, but I’m curious what are the signs of a bad lifer before the cam is toast, if any?

Or if it’s to the point where It’s tapping, is the cam surely dead?

No cels just loud tapping cold and hot.
Tapping sounds. Sounds different to the exhaust stud tick I had before.

Thanks in advance

James

If you can hear the tapping under the wheel well, it is likely lifter-related. Search for lifter tapping noise on the Forum and there are audios about the difference between the lifter tapping and exhaust broken bolt puffing.

Considering trading my 2018 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3EcoTech with 55k miles in for a 2017 Ram 5.7L Hemi with around 90k miles just to lose the truck payment. After reading this thread, I am second guessing my consideration. Is there that many issues with the 5.7? I will link the truck and CarFax report. The primary purpose of this truck is to tow my 7x14 enclosed work trailer (contractor use) and some daily tasks not involving work for whats it worth. Thanks in advance.

The oil changes are at 10,000 miles or more apart, I don't see any brakes serviced or tires changed, with that amount of miles they were probably thruway or travel miles, I would check the tires, brakes, spark plugs and exhaust manifold bolts and lifter, cam issues all of the oil changes for the transmission, front and rear differential, and transfer case.

I just put a new cam in my 2018 2500 6.4L at 49,000
the cam is junk!!
Damn that sucks. What kind of oil and how frequent were the oil changes? I'm changing mine every 4 to 5k to try and hope this doesn't happen to me. I went the hemi route instead of another cummins because I thought my short drives would eventually lead to issues with the emissions on the cummins. I just assumed the gas would be fine, didn't start looking into any issues like lifter and cam until after I got my hemi.

Same here - that's why this Forum is excellent in sharing help. I probably still would have gotten the Hemi because whatever the price is now for a Cummins is off the charts for me. Mileage no longer pays for itself, nor the fuel. EPA made diesels cost-prohibitive by going for zero emissions - expensive diesel fuel (strip almost all sulfur out), expensive engines (high pressure injection for low soot, aftertreatment for low oxides of nitrogen). The engine is basically a science fair, now.

What cam did you install ?
220/228 113+2 "Mark 82" (best seller). Great daily driver cam. Noticeable idle, but not rough. Makes great power from 2000-6800 rpm in both 5.7 and 6.4. Phaser limiter recommended. Converter not required in car or truck but would benefit from one. . Perfect camshaft for daily driver cars/trucks. Our demo 392 Challenger went 10.94 on E85 at 4000 lbs, 2300 ft DA, only other mods were 87mm TB, 1320 TC, longtubes, mids, Bogart drag pack, Hellcat CAI. (Same car went 11.60s on stock cam in 2600 ft DA as a baseline)

If there is down pressure on the lifter in the bore, you can't build a cam that will survive it. Metallurgy on failed cams have shown the cam metal isnt the issue. It is a lubrication issue, this forum has proven by using extreme pressure additives, the additives that survive poor flow (in most situations), you can protect that cam better.
