I have a 2014 Bighorn that turned 91k miles the other day. The lifters make some noise, but no major malfunctions so far.

I'm wondering what most Ram owners see as the best mileage to get max return on their used truck going to new? I think I can hopefully stretch this one to 130k miles and then sell it for new. Could be just my thinking that going 150k plus you take more chances of something expensive breaking that will need fixed before you can sell it. Just curious, because I have never ran a vehicle over 150k. Thanks!

I sold my last 2009 Ram 5.7L, when i had 144,000 miles on it
It ran good, it was mostly stock, except for the Magnaflow 18" muffler & the Catch Can

I sold it cheap to a High School Gym Teacher & school counselor.
He is still driving it 6 years later

Look up did redline kill my hemi tick, read it look at poll results, near 80% success rate. Also look up when not to use redline thread, higher mileage hasnt had the same success, but imo worth the shot. My goal, my 2010 will be the last truck I ever buy, I had hemi tick, quiet now 11 years I did nothing but try that lubrication strategy redline 5w30 and a royal purple 20-820, there is a lot of science in those two choices posted on the board. You say it is ticking, who is gonna give you top dollar on that? I guess your best chance is something like carvana or similar that don't see it first, dunno man? This is something 100's of ram forum members tried because of the frustration with fca and had bad results even new cam/lifters. The lubrication strategies are a legit long term fix if it works. There are some cases where it wont work, example needle bearings have already failed, but most of the time the EP additives kill that tick dead as hell.

If you do trade it there are a couple things you can try to silent tick, more of a mask then the redline strategy, but not good for a long term result, Let mne know what you decide.

I would say right about where you are now (under 100k) would be a good time to start looking/pricing. If you're even thinking about a new truck, start getting numbers and seeing what deal you can work out. Once you tick over 100k it starts to look like a higher mile truck.

Also, the market on pickups is probably in transition. Before Ukraine, used pickups were in uber-high demand. The longer fuel prices stay real high, the more inflation talk there is, and also general uncertainty in the 'market', the more buyers of thirsty pickups, might sit on the sidelines or buy more fuel efficient cars. Then dealers may not want to risk giving high-money on used tks anymore. Meaning your trade will be worth a lot less (i.e. overall new truck deal will cost you more). So my thought is starter sooner than later. You can always drag your feet if you're not seeing the right deal.

I typically trade them after the powertrain warranty is up but this one may be different. I work from home and 3 years in my 2018 only has 26,000 on it (had 8000 when I bought it May 2019). So figuring I'd keep this one at least 7-10 years and I'm in a position now where replacing an engine won't bankrupt me (although I pray that doesn't happen cause it will leave a dent...lol). We kept my wifes 2006 Jeep Commander until it had 125,000 on it and we bought it new. I tried to talk her into trading it after about 80,000 but she was resistant to getting rid of her favorite vehicle...lol

Burla typed that his current 2010 Dodge Ram was his last truck

Are you that old that the DMV wont allow you to take the test ?

No doubt before that 100k mark. It’s funny most of the used trucks I see on all the sites are sitting at like 80-90k knowing that’s when to trade it in due to warranty coming up and other reasons that seem to drop the value right at that 100k+ mark.

Yeah I would definitely trade before 100,000. My last 2 trucks were traded with 67,000 (2013 1500) and 55,000 (2007 1500).

EDIT: actually my 2007 started flaking the plastic chrome off the grill and it had the 4.7 and I hated it anyway so traded it. My 2013 had a broken exhaust manifold bolt and it wasn't rated to tow out new to us 8900lb boat

So its best to cover up the tick and let some other sucker get stuck?

My parents just sold the 2003 2500 that I bought new, it had 150k on it. Multiple people interested. You should sell when you are ready and not try to time mileage. Some people want cheaper higher mileage like some want more expensive lower mileage. Good luck.

Honestly I think it depends on the person and what they want to do. With prices right now I wouldn't think it would be a good time to buy but that is me.

With my truck I hit the jackpot and got a killer deal on my truck when I bought mine at the end of 2020.

With your truck have you looked on KBB and saw what the trade value is based on what you got and mileage?

Play with mileage to see how far you can go before it tanks in price and where you want to be at when you look for new or used

Thats my friendly advice

Yeah farout, almost as bad as a manu sitting on it's hands while the masses suffer from this. Buyer beware, buy a hemi you should offer a cam job under what it is worth otherwise or walk away. But I guess it is the owners fault for trusting a manu and they in turn should accept all the responsibility for this known defect out of some type of bull crud guilt trip? I say mask the hell out of it and send it back to the dealer or some other car site and if the next guy doesnt buy the warranty that comes there that is on him/her. Consider like washing the car, vacuuming the interior, putting odor sticks in to mask cigarettes smell, the stuff dealers do to make you forget you are buying someonelses mess. Or do you get mad at that as well? lol

There is no mis fire, he is not selling a damaged engine, masking hemi tick is just a smart move when selling. I'd do it to a dealer in a second.

+1

As for the rest of us, at least those who've mitigated Hemi tick or prevented it, imma run it until I don't need it no more. I'm 'only' 63 (hah! more like 83 with my body mileage), so I plan to use my 3/4 ton Ram until I can't use it for 3/4 ton truck work anymore. So, it depends on your body age/condition and what you want to do next. At some point, mother nature wins.

"the lifters make some noise"? At start up only or when the engine is at normal operating temp? Most of the cam/lifter issues that I have read about start between 80K and 100K miles, or your engine may never have the issue, which the majority of the engines easily run great for more than 150K miles.
I always considered the "hemi tick" as the noise from an exhaust leak, which is an easy fix. If you are concerned that you have failing lifters, noise gets louder when the engine warms up, then there is already slack in the valve train and the damage is done (doesn't sound like your concern). Bad lifters and you will get an engine code when you bring the RPM up. Changing oil additives won't help slack in the valve train. Most likely you are hearing the injectors popping off, which is normal.
The best time to trade in? Just before the vehicle's longest warranty runs out. Seems you are past that, so if your truck does what you need it to do, can you really see that new truck being worth the extra money? New trucks just seem ridiculously high priced and at some point, new trucks will be produced in mass again and the price will have to come down.

It just seems a little noisy after sitting for a while and other times no noise. There’s my hours stats to date

I always used to trade at around 60-65,000 because that is about when I have always had to start replacing stuff..tires..battery..alternator..etc. so cost of ownership goes up. now is not a good time to trade unless you have a good reason. you get more for your trade-in but new ones cost more and in a year or two you will upside down because sales prices will eventually come down.

My other thought was to basically park it at 91k miles unless I have truck duties and buy a new mpg car. I could then stretch it with this truck for several years

It has about every option available in 2014 including tow hooks, 32 gallon tank and 3.92’s. My original window sticker showed $75 for the tank and they charge $400 for the 33 gallon today. My same truck is $60,000 today with no cover, running boards, or bed liner.
