New Member Looking for Advice, I just purchased a 2014 2500 with low 22,000 miles. Unfortunately I wasnt aware that it had 11,400 idle hours!!!!

You can always buy an extended warranty "IF" it starts making noise. However if there is no blowby and very little oil useage I would NOT think twice about it and start enjoying the truck.

I agree with jagman. There are two things you can have done to give you peace of mind.

First, a compression test on all cylinders. They just take out one spark plug on each cylinder and crank w/o starting. The psi recorded tells you health of ring and valve seal. All should probably be around 180 or more on a healthy engine.

Second is valve/lifter rise. They remove the valve covers and crank w/o starting to make sure all valves are being lifted the same amount. If any aren’t, they probably have lifters going bad which will eat the cam.

Have both of these tests done for a few hundred dollars and you will know what condition you are in.

Did you by it from a dealer and was it disclosed and priced accordingly or did they list it as a super low mileage truck and also price it accordingly?

That is the real question here if it was a private sale, auction, or some other as is/where is type of sale the responsibility is on you.

all that said if it runs good and the oil pressure, consumption, compression etc are normal I wouldn't worry about it to much.

If it was a dealer sale depending on the state your in they may have some explaining to do.

If a Railroad had it, you know it has been maintained to the 9's. I would rather have yours and know, than to have one I was guessing what it did.

Since you can't really borescope all cams (unless there's some flex tube gizmo now via an access port), the fact you can't hear it is great news. That means it's not worn or pitted enough, or the lifter roller sticking enough, to be whacking each other.

Get some Redline 5W-30 in there and a RP 20-820 oil filter. Change every 5k miles. You're likely good to go.

My experience with the idle/drive meter is a lot different than yours which makes me trust it even less. In 2019 I bought a 2018 Ram 2500 SLT w/the Cummins motor. It had 10K miles on the clock and the idle/drive meter read 168 Idle hours and 99 Drive hours. Here I am three years later and I've added 101K miles in three years and the meter reads 269 Idle hours and 345 Drive hours. I drive fast but I don't drive 410+ miles per hour. I have searched high and low and can't find anyone else who has ever had this issue. Other than the time it takes me to walk from the front door to the truck, some down time in traffic, and the occasional drive-thru the truck doesn't idle much so no idea where all those idle hours came from although it is definitely much more accurate/closer than the driving hours.

Am I screwed or what? My wife's gonna kill me. Its a 5.7 and m concerned that its gonna soon die on me. Doesnt have much service records on carfax. Thoughts anyone? Dont know if the engine is at the end of its life and worry that its gonna die on me on some long road trip... Thanks!
What are the total hours?

Regards,
Dusty

The hour meter on both my Rams was a joke. Not even close to actual.

my 2012 5.7 had high idle hrs.it was a fleet lease return when i bought it.i can't recall how many but it was up there.the mileage was around 20 thousand miles.when i sold it there were just under 200,000 trouble free miles on it,other than the hemi tick manifold stud and thermostat replacement.

Maybe I misunderstood the original post. So the idle hours and the total hours are the same?
