Just ordered the powerstop z36 tow and haul pads with vented and slotted rotors. The one thing besides the transmission in this truck I have never really cared for are the brakes. I have 161k on it now and the rotors have never been replaced that I can see. I removed the star clips that are installed at the factory to hold the rotors on to know this. Pretty impressed with the way they have held up and still are doing good at this point but I can’t stand the soft feeling pedal. I did replace the fronts with the Wagner pads a while back but didn’t seem to help so I figured I would just upgrade all four.
I installed the Power Stop (KC2164A-36 Front & Rear Z36) Truck and Tow Brake Kit with Calipers, and I am very happy with the result.

You might also want to upgrade from OEM to braided stainless brake lines. I did the pads and calipers and did notice improvement, but later did the brake hoses ...that was when the magic happened. Just FYI... I agree that drilled is mostly for looks. Slotted has the greatest effect on performance IMO.

Putting power stop on your truck is probably the best decision you’ll ever make! The key to success with them, is following the break in procedure. Follow it closely.

I have almost 110,00 miles in my 17 1500. all stock. I have been very pleased with OE and I intend to replace the brakes when they need done with OE. If something works we;; I leave it as it was.

I installed both front and rear Power Stop pads on my 16 Powerwagon and it really made braking much quicker and with less peddle pressure, the brakes always felt spongy even after i changed brake fluid, never liked the brakes , but better with power stop pads front and rear with stock rotors..

I bought my truck back in 2014 its one of the first thing I did. No regrts! they hold up really well. Just be careful on that first stop they grab weird the first couple times. I had some thoughts about upgrading the calipers but I think that is bit overkill... idk have you guys considered it?
I put those same rotors and pads on my 2011 Sport, and I'm either proud to say, or ashamed, I'm not sure which, they have been on it for 6-7 years, and still look good. I just recently ordered new pads for it and will get them on as soon as we get settled from moving. Great rotors and pads.

@demonram, yea i am pretty sure the same for me. I installed them i think in 2015 and i am pretty sure they are the same pads. but that being said my dad has 2009 2500 diesel and he used to haul camper trailers and quite literally did laps across the USA. I think over 300k miles still on original OEM brakes and pads. he bought his truck not far from mine.

Thanks for the report. I agree, while I dont expect sports car type braking from my 7k lb truck, i don't feel the stock brakes have the power/ grip I think they should, even running empty.

I’ll find out once I can beat these rotors off. They are giving me a work out. Lol

Without a hydraulic puller, not sure imma want this job. We pulled the hub of son's Chevy Colorado and had to use a bottle jack rigged to a bar steel push arm. Even after PB Blaster for days.

Talking to a local auto shop, they said Ram HD is a beetch to get apart in rust belt states if it's been awhile.

I did the Z36 kit including the calipers last year and love them. Firm pedal and great stopping. I am an aggressive driver so went with the 36 instead of the 23

I was thinking of going with the PS Z23 moderate package when the time comes, which has ceramic pads instead of carbon fiber ceramic pads in the Z36 tow package. I'm not using the truck to tow through mountainous terrain, so good enough?

Thoughts?
I have the Z23's on my 2012 RAM for several years, they are awesome. I have the Z36's on my car and they squeal for the first few minutes of driving. Next pad change I'll be using the 23's on the car too.

I installed the z36 package front and rear on my 2014 Longhorn 4 months ago and absolutely love it- no regrets. I regularly tow a 5k camper up and down the mountains of Utah (and just pulled it out here to San Diego yesterday) and these brakes give so much more confidence than the stock rotors and pads that were on it previously.

Followed the bedding process to a “t” and no issues whatsoever.

Did first brake /rotor replacement in April at 133K. Decided to upgrade to the PS Z36 with slotted rotors. Bought on Amazon at great price. Good decision. Truck stops on a dime, smooth as glass. After replacing brakes I noticed slight wheel hub noise so decided to replace the hubs with Timkens. Of course had to pull pads, calipers and rotors off again so unique opportunity to inspect and reinstall the brakes. They were in perfect shape and with new wheel hubs vehicle drives and stops better than new with 136K miles. If waffling on whether to go with the Z36 extreme truck & tow v. alternative, don't worry. You won't be disappointed.

Every vehicle I own, when it's time for brakes/rotors, I put the Powerstop slotted and drilled with pads. My DW thinks the road between our house and Wal Mart is Watkins Glen, but even she can't wear them out. I figure I've saved a lot of money putting these on as opposed to the junk at the local Auto Parts stores.

Exactly why i went with the z36 myself lol ..sometimes especially down hill some ridge racer would cut me off and braking was not very comforting lol ... now braking is smooth and effortless for my truck

I've had them for two yrs now and they are a seat of the pants improvement over very competent Ram brakes. I have the diesel and they improve the whoa factor. Be sure and bed them in per manufacturer's instructions. It's VERY important.
