have been on the 1500 site, wife and i have hit retirement and want to see some of the country.

We are looking at trading my 1500 for a 2500, went and looked at a cpl dealerships and they didnt have what i really wanted to see.

how much more room is there in a mega cab "200 pound lap dog half english mastiff and half lab" he has trouble turing around in my crewcab.

and how far do the power running boards either mopar or amp go down ? wife is 5'5 and i know a 3/4 will sit higher than my half ton

thanks all
Troy

I had bought a mega cab back in 2006. Loved it and so did our Saint Bernard!! Mine has a longer than normal wheelbase which made it tough to park but smoother riding. That was the only downside I noted. I think you’ll enjoy it. Good luck

2021 3500...The running boards are a necessity (IMO) to get in and out, even before I leveled it. The electric ones come down pretty low, so your wife will be OK...My dates are, and I don't date tall women. :) Of course, I help them up because I'm a gentleman. :banana-mario:

I have AMP power boards. They come out & down. They give a nice wide foot area to step on. I would say the distance is about in the middle of the difference between the cab floor and the ground.
If you are buying a new truck, maybe buying the Mopar power boards, the dealer may be able to “tell” the truck and you would have soft buttons in the radio head. I believe you would need to at least have the 8.4 radio though.

OEM power Boards on a 2500 Laramie Crew Cab. Splits the distance to ground almost exactly in half. Excellent for short people or those with knee issues. I stayed with CC because I wanted the 8' box. It has more than enough room for the dog you have.

I have had both the 3500, and now a 2500. The running boards are a must on either in my opinion. I had the fixed running boards on my 3500 that were just fine. Now my 2500 had the retractable versions from the factory. They are about right and work great and my wife seems to be comfortable with them too. But I will admit, coming from a 1500.....it is a step up to get in the truck.

AMP and RBP now have extended drop motors , but the RBP ones are still out of stock so the AMPs would be your best bet .... my wife is 5'4 and she gets in and out of my truck with a 7" lift without any problems ....

Yeah, the Mega has a lot more room for the dogs. Plus is much more comfortable for long trips as the rear seat passengers can recline as well. Only drawback for the dogs is the platform with the seats folded down is higher, so they may need a boost to get in.

I had the power running boards on my previous F-150, and I knew they were a must on the Ram for my vertically challenged wife. At 5'2" she can basically walk up into the cab. And, at $995 they are a steal as an option.
Even people who aren't real short have issues. I am 5'9" with a 31" inseam. If you measure fron the floor height in my 2500, to the ground it is 28". That means I have to get my foot about waist high to step into the truck without any boards. I love the ease of getting in and out with the power boards, and I also like that I can get my whole foot onto the board, no slipping on wet or icy boards. Being nearly the same price as fixed boards I see zero downside, and depite some claims, I have never had issues with mud or ice jamming the boards.

I have two St. Bernards that ride in the back of my MegaCab. I just put down beach towels to help protect the seat because I don't fold them down. Plus the power running boards fold down to help them get in.

I don't think you'll be able to find a set of OEM anywhere for $995, I tried. All I could find were $1400-$1600, and then whatever the price of installation would be. I was just lucky that my dealer was able to add the power boards to my order after a VIN was assigned. I somehow missed the power board option on the build/price page before I placed my original order. Good luck.

Also, plan for the unknown. I mangled my leg in a nasty motorbike crash and without the running boards, I would not be able to get into my truck. Sure, you can add it later but it is nice to have it now considering all the reasons we can’t get stuff like supply chain, chips etc.

I have the extended cab with a large doodle and a springer spaniel. I’d recommend the mega cab for you plus all the extra reasons guys have mentioned for future two-legged passengers. I do love the lay-flat extensions so I just put down a furniture blanket and a dog bed for long trips. Short in-town trips I only use the blanket. Last, I am OCD about dog hair and face drool on the door panels. They don’t mess them up too bad but I did buy the interior protection option from my dealer which will protect my truck for as long as I own it. Including pet damage and my lady is clumsy as hell always spilling stuff.

Last, the dogs do need a little help into the truck as they are not ‘used’ to how to get in. They can and will jump it since they are 2 and just over 1 year old. As they age, having the power deployable running boards will be a big help. I prefer the look of the power deployable vs. static. Just a personal thing. They are plenty wide for my leg injury and I’m super glad I have them. Enjoy your new girl when she arrives!

Actually, this is a VERY good point. Before I made the decision to custom order my truck, the dealer had an in-transit one that for 1,600, they would add a set non-OEM. Could not get anything OEM after the fact due to the fact I'm sure Stellantis is requiring all parts for their new builds.

It did NOT hold up the truck for me. Order date 2.26.22 - took delivery 6.18.22.

on the dog entry i see weathertech makes and ramp for dogs, and i could make one out of wood but it might be a bit heavy the wt ones are aluminum, and i figure a garage sale blanket or to in the flat fold.

im going to have to ask on the interior protection, havent heard of that.

i built a cpl trucks on the ram website and on the big horn edition which has everything i want BUT it did not a option for the mopar power boards, ill have to ask about that.

one of the biggest reasons i like the big horn is the brown interior, nothing wrong with they grey but i have had gray in the last 3 trucks. next step is a long horn to get the brown and that a lot more coinage

ill try to find a good low mileage used, but i dont expect much luck.

Troy, when I ordered my truck the Laramie was the lowest trim that allowed the power boards as an option. The dealer did say he would install factory boards on a Bighorn for 500 more than the option price so you may want to check that when you are ordering. I ended up going with the Laramie because it gave me factory painted flares, the boards and a few other options I wanted that didn't come on the lower levels. It was actually cheaper to buy the Laramie than to add the options to the next one down.

I went from 1500 to 2500 earlier this year, wife if 5'1" and I'm 5'6" power running boards are great. Remember to deploy them in car wash otherwise they don't clean.
