Hey all,

I'm the original owner of a '05 Ram Daytona 2WD 5.7 with 135k miles. I know the trucks history since I'm the only owner and driver.

I took her on a little trip from Florida to Georgia (~ 600 miles) with a 4 day rest in between. While returning, along the Florida turnpike at a speed around 75 mph, I suddenly heard a "pop" from underneath and lost power with the truck still running perfect. I cruised to the shoulder and shut her down.

The truck starts and runs perfect and smooth as should. The issue is the transmission. There is no power from the transmission in any gear. As if it's in neutral in every gear. It shifts into every gear with ease as should also. There is a light winding sound from the trans at idle and of course it ramps up when I throttle up. There is no other sounds, no leaks (all dry underneath) and still full of its trans fluid. No smell of anything odd also.

I have never towed anything behind this truck nor have I ever been hard on the driving and trans. What driving there has been done has all been easy miles. I change oil every 5k, have change rear end fluid once and trans fluids 3x. I've maintained this truck very well.

I know engines very well but know very little about transmissions. I will fix myself including installing a new re-manufactured trans if needed, but wanted to know if there's other things to look at before I run out and buy another trans. Could this be a shift solenoid inside the trans fluid pan? and would it cause it to make a winding noise ?

Thanks in advance for suggestions and advise
Darrell

Btw, my truck has never thrown any codes. Transmission shifts into each gear as it should without any hang-ups. Everything underneath appears normal, no fluid leaks, shift linkage mover as it should, fluid on dip stick is at the proper level and clean. Obviously something internal happened. I thought about removing the trans pan but I suspect it'll look normal.

Pull your trans pan and make sure your filter did not come loose. It’s a place to start.

May also try unplugging any sensors on the sides and then reconnect,in case they were loose.

Sounds like a torque converter, the bearings can go bad and it will sound like a whining noise up coming from the bell housing.

If you put it into gear and are able to roll it a little downhill or something and don't hear anything from the transmission it is almost certainly the torque converter. Rockauto has got rebuilt ones for $300-ish if I remember right. Did mine about 2 years ago

I am the original owner of an 08 Ram 1500... The transmission has always felt like mush to me. I’ve heard a whine when I drive it hard in 1st gear. I wish there was a way to tell the trans computer to shift firmer.

My 08 only has 108k on it. I changed the trans fluid at 80k. When I change the fluid, I found the factory had damaged the oil filter. It was mangled at the seam. Luckily for me my fluid was never lower than the seam… I didn’t think my fluid was bad, just knew it was 10 years old. My fluid didn’t look bad, smell bad and there was absolutely nothing in the pan that looked like clutch material. It still shifted like mush…
