While I was waiting for my tires I saw 3 gallons of Kirkland 15w-40 for under 40 bucks. Had Cummins seal on it among others but didn't take a picture of what the rating was.

Anyone know anything about it?

I just went on their site. It is conventional oil, CK-4 rated.
3-1 gallon jugs for $39.99. I suppose it is packaged by one of
the big oil companies, just like Sams and Walmart.

Found this on an oil forum:

Kirkland Signature Heavy Duty Diesel 15W-40 is blended by Warren Distribution (WD) which is the same oil marketer that makes Walmart's Super Tech brand. Warren Distribution blends Mag 1 oil which is their own house brand. WD also blends motor oils for major retail chain stores like Meijer in the midwest, and they also blend AmazonBasics oils. Overall, Warren Distribution blends pretty solid motor oils with decent additive packages.

Any opinions on it? I'm not trying cheap out on anything as important as oil, but I just filled up with fuel and I will be very surprised if I have to fill up more than once before my next year's oil change.
I'm not unhappy with the Valvoline I put in there last year, just not sure if it's any better than the Kirkland since time is the big factor, not milage.

In my 2006 5.9 found that conventual oil was good for about 6 months that is why I gave up on it (when truck was in northern Iowa) I went to synthetic oil like Rotella T6 found out I could go to 12 month OCI thus saving me money, this was based on UOA..

I am wearing my fingers out, try to find out if a

2016 Ram 1500 3.0 eco-diesel uses

Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 Full Synthetic Motor Oil
or
Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 Full Synthetic Heavy-Duty Motor Oil
or
Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Engine Oil

I went in 05/ July 2022 , Invoice reads
68171006 PB Oil 5w-40
synthetic diesel engine oil

..........................................................
all the earlier work orders read

68001332 PB Oil 5w-40

When i ordered the eco-diesel & did the paperwork
I signed up for 10 free Oil Changes,
something called a Sales LOF Contract

found this:
SHELL SAE 5W-40 ROTELLA T6 FULL SYNTHETIC

Part Number - 68001332PA

Category - ENGINE OILS

MSQ: 6

Part Description

Approved for Cummins Turbo Diesels. Recommended for heavy duty drive cycle, towing, and commercial use. Preferred when temperature is 5° F or below.

===========
I am still confused, is the Numerical description change because of the size of the container that it comes in ??

I've been using the Kirkland diesel oil for some time on my land management equipment. Typical hydraulic equipment where the engine operates under a load most of the time. I don't have any long-term data but nothing has broken and I've never heard anything bad. If you watch any of the YouTube videos on heavy equipment, you will see brands like Travelers and other private labeling like NAPA, for example being used, all from Warren.

I typically run T6 in my Cummins until it became impossible to find not long ago so I used Kirkland. The Kirkland oil has the CK/CJ ratings needed and as posted, it comes from Warren which has a solid reputation. With so many items out of control on pricing like brand name oil, I'm likely going to stay with Kirkland oils.

I think that pa, pb and pc stuff are just supersede codes. I looked and both part numbers I saw were 5w40 oil. But it had no detail beyond that on the sight I looked at.

If you're like me you'll never have peace of mind if you question the oil you are using. It may be fine, but it has to fine in my mind before I put it in my engine. These truck aren't cheap, and I wouldn't chance an oil just because it's cheaper when a replacement engine cost many 1000's of dollars. As my dear old Dad used to say, "It only cost a little more to go first class". Good luck on your decision .

With that said Warren does make a good product. I used some of their Wally World fluids in my old '92 Toyota truck with no problems. However it was an old truck, and could be put back together with bailing wire, and twine. :)

I ordered the Valvoline. 2 gallons of it anyway. Waiting on a restock for the third gallon.

60 bucks a year is nothing when topping up from half a tank cost me 125 bucks.

What does the owner's manual call for (CK4/CJ4)? You can use any of the three you listed but if synthetic is more expensive, save the money and go with conventional. Since oil change intervals are by mileage or time, usage extension offered by synthetic oil isn't realized and the advantage synthetic has in standing up to high engine heat, well, diesels just don't spin that fast.

In the GEN 3 ECODiesels, they call for a very specific oil specification, I believe it is MS-12991

When you have your Oil Service done at Dealerships

I believe Conventional Motor Oil is drawn out of 50 gallon barrels

Synthetic Motor Oil is stacked in cardboard boxes

Your Work Order or Invoice only indicate the 8 digit number, that usually begins with 68******

They don't bother with letting you know about MS- numbers

So WE or I, can only hope that they are using the acceptable lubricants

Based on Rotella web site they only have One 5w40 T6 synthetic diesel oil thus all 3 you listed above are the same oil just listed in different ways

Example I just saw Rotella T6 at Walmart for under $30 gallon, a price that I don't think will break the bank for most diesel owners... IMHO spending an extra $30-45. for a synthetic oil change compared to Dino oil is well worth it IMHO, I call it cheap insurance knowing that the oil only gets changed out once a year,. I also know that synthetic oil, based on UOA holds up lot better then old Dino oil at the end of 12 months of usage...

the eco-diesel engines are suppose to use Full Synthetic Motor Oil

A revision for the motor oil SAE Weight came out around August 2016

Before then, it had been 5W-20, that was why they had so many engines stacked in a pile in most of the larger dealerships

Wow, under $30, it's $23 over here for T6 and well inventoried now. Menards also has T6 for $23 less their 11% off, Menards in an upper mid-states big box store, like Home Depot or Lowes but bigger.

I'd be interested in seeing the UOA reports comparing synthetic versus conventional oils. I know over the years, conventional, as well as synthetics, have received much better additives promoting longer life in diesel engines. Have a reference you can share?

I no longer have the UOA reports for the Dino oil or the T6 synthetic, I sold the truck so trashed the paper work related to it. My self being that Rotella T6 is so cheap an has been for many years have never understood why people would not use synthetic oil, I mean a person spends extra $$$ to get a diesel engine, yet many seen to want to skimp on the cost of the oil that is the life blood of the engine...
