This is how it starts;

A couple friends and I are eating at iHOP. right across the street is a dodge dealership. The youngest of the group says rather randomly with a certain amount of authority “Ron you need to get a newer truck”. I look over my glasses away from the menu and grunt “oh?”. “Your truck is older than I am” he says. I am somewhat humored now and reply, “and”? (he is talking about my 2007) “Com’on Ron it’s so analog, it doesn’t have a hotspot, it’s so old it doesn’t even have Bluetooth”. I am chuckling now, as I say “so?” (I guess he forgot about the 86 ram in the driveway) He points to a new Rebel across the street, “and you could have paint that looks like that”. “Like what” I reply. “Shiny” he says. “Is that so” I reply. The oldest guy with us looks up but just smiles a big Cheshire cat grin. (He asked to have my 98 ram because it’s so analog) I asked him, “do you believe I should spend sixty thousand dollars to have Bluetooth a hotspot and shiny paint?” I blew my coffee out my nose when he said “Com’on Ron its CDI everyone knows that” referring to the Chris Cagle song "Chicks Dig It". (I have to admit I am rolling on the floor laughing my a** off at this point along with the other three guys at the table.) To be fair I am 58 and my young friend is 22, and all of us are veterans, there is a shared sense of humor we all have. After we quit laughing, I said my “old girl” is right as rain, I take care of her and she never lets me down, we are good thank you.

We sat there for a while; I could sense the challenge. I decided to put it out on the table, would Bluetooth a hotspot and shiny paint make my truck acceptable to todays "standards"? Its not just that, your truck is just old, tired looking. I tilted my head in wonder, you simply need to update to the current style, you know, panache he says. Short of buying a different truck how much do you think it would take to update “my panache” I ask. You can’t get there from here he says. The rest of the table gives the “ohs and ahs”. Everyone gets quite and we sit there drinking our coffee. I look across the street at that shinny Rebel. I tell you, right there I accepted the challenge. Let’s just say that Rebel is 60K for GP I said to my young compatriot. I will drop 1 tenth of that price tag, 6 grand into my truck and give it a shiny digital panache, that's on par with the shiny new Rebel. When I am done, show me what that shiny digital Rebel has over my paid for, debit free, title in my safe Laramie has. Convince me I should assume the dealer’s debit for that truck to get something more then I got. However, you must convince the other three at the table as well. If you convince us I will walk over there and buy that truck. He laughed and said I was full of sh**, and if you convince me your right, what? You’ll simply agree shiny digital panache don’t cost 60K plus interest over 8 years! Game on came the reply.

And that is how these things start.

Last night I thought to myself, self this will be fun to share, track and audit on the forum. Lets see what old analog guy can come up with.

All funny but too funny, typical Gen Zer. Now, I do have a 2019 DT truck, but lil lowly Bighorn, not got all the bells and whistles, no fancy seats, projector lights, fancy 12" U Connect, not even sos. But it is paid for, and I can do all needed stuff through phone,. Guess not enuf panache in my 2019 either, LOL.

Heck no, yer '07 prob run longer than my 19, lol.

This story reminds me of my early 20's youthfulness where.... I asked the family attorney, who lived down the street from my folks "Why don't you live in a great big fancy schmancy house?" And I rattled off several uber rich areas of the great metropolis that constitutes Houston, Texas.

His response was similar to yours in that he responded through guffaws of laughter that he had plenty of house where he lived right then (He'd raised his children there and was nearing retirement age). At 67 years old, and in 20/20 hindsight, I get it.

Can someone point me to the "chicks" that "dig it"? (for Informational purposes only of course) I have yet to meet one that gives a damn about what I'm driving or any of the engineering marvels I find cool or how much effort I put into a project, unless that project is for her.

Here I thought my 05 looked fantastic. I feel pride in ownership every time I get in. To find out it's yesterday's egg salad and girls won't like me because it's not a new Rebel.... what am I going to do? Good thing I married someone 20 years younger that doesn't care about what I drive.

Because they don't and I've owned the high-end sports car to prove it. When I stopped at a gas pump/restaurant/anywhere, it was the MEN that were photographing it and chasing me to get a closer look. Women care about your status, ability to make them feels safe, and abundance mentality....cars/trucks just don't factor in.

This is my current configuration, almost all stock. I added a second battery and OEM tray, upgraded alternator and built a stand alone 200 amp fuse box to support my amateur radios. Its really hard to see the clear coat is almost gone. This has the Infinity Radio System, that is the first transformation. It started today.

What are the two squares on either side of the temperature controls?

Are you replacing the head unit? If so with what?

As good as mine sounds, I don't like the speakers being behind the door panels, but I didn't want to butcher the door panels to mount the speakers in them. 6x9's behind 6 inch circular grills just seems wrong.
If I had an extra set of door panels or was doing another install, I might reconsider. Go with round components in the door panels and use the included grills in place of the molded speaker grills in the doors.
In my neighborhood I try not to call too much attention to it or give anyone a reason to want to break in. I know that is muddying the sound and reducing separation I could be getting. Think about that when you are picking out replacements.
The side view mirror trim panels that say Infinity would have been perfect mounting locations for component tweeters. I almost got another amp and a set of mids to go in the dash, but I was sort of on a budget, so I put the tweeters up there instead. I'm not missing any midrange so it's just as well.

@BadHemi2014, Greater Cincinnati Area! Hi neighbor. You're the third local I've seen post on this board. Few more and we'll have enough for a cruise in.

When I was a newly hired puppy at an oil industry machine shop right out of high school, I was being trained as a machinist by an old salty boot named Phil. He would send me to the tool room for all sort of ridiculous things. One was to go get a left handed monkey wrench. Another was a bolt stretcher.

Left one would be for transfer case switch (if he had electric shift) and the right one for airbag turn off switch (if he had a reg cab). Since the truck doesn't have either, they're just empty cubby holes.

Had to laugh at this as i just bought a used '22 Rebel (8700) miles on it that has a few bells and whistles. My current 09 Laramie has 251K miles on it and is beginning to nickel & dime me to death. Needs an evap core, wheel bearing and for some reason it only starts with the remote start. Using the key in ignition just cranks & cranks...who knows. Damn thing has always had some electrical gremlins in it. I always buy used and this is my 4th Ram...i've always got at least 180K out of them as well.
At 53 im not looking at the "CDI" factor! :) That said all the safety $hit on these things nowadays drives me nuts. I cannot even put this thing in neutral without starting it...or back up with door open. Ugh....
I'll drive this thing to 250K with any luck & get a new (used) '32. :)

That's older mature women you are talking about. The 22-year olds having coffee with him are after the younger ones!
