I know this a bit off topic, in addition to a step i am also looking into putting a small hoist in bed, a little crane to help me get heavy/large object in. i love to go camping and do outdoors stuff. but loading ice chest, generators, and whatever else by myself just is not happening. i have been doing some research on my own Harbor Freight
has a little hoist. https://www.harborfreight.com/12-to...-bed-crane-60732.html?_br_psugg_q=truck+hoist But I think i can find better out there maybe even go fancy and find an electric one. If you guys have come across anything better or have any other ideas how to go about it please let me know.

I like the idea... I wonder if it would be able hang high enough to use to hang game out the back when processing after hunting.

Just wanted to throw this out there as an alternative or if it might help anyone.
I was considering one of the steps being discussed, but I decided on this wheel step instead.
Wheel Step
I'm 5'0" and not getting any younger. Getting in my truck bed and even checking the oil can be a challenge!
This step comes pre-assembled, it folds up, and is big enough to make it easy when getting out of the bed. Only downside is having to store it in the truck, as it doesn't latch closed when folded and it's not small.

That’s real neat. It would make a good workstation step when doing engine work.

It would take some modifications to make it work. It definitely won't bolt right on. If you were closer to me I'd let you see how much modifying it would take. I still have the one I took off a previous gen5 1500. You're only 2900-ish miles away. Road trip? :D

I got my bed step in today, first impression is that it looks well made. In some respects it is very similar to the OEM step. The foot pad is made from cast metal, it did come with instructions and hardware (a bolt and nut). I will get it installed this weekend, and report on the single exhaust fit.

That is like the step I installed. The instructions were a bad copy of what looked like the AMP instructions. You’ll need the bolt (my was 18mm) , I had a nut welded to my frame. It doesn’t take long to install, maybe 30 minutes. Let us know how you make out.

Got the bed step installed today. Took me about 45 min, I work slow. Only issue I had was figuring out how to take apart the QD on my harness, google search helped. I didnt like how they taped the connector from the factory so I took some time and taped it up right. The fit in the single exhaust V6 is perfect. Everything lined up and torqued to 125 ft lbs, without issue. I didnt need the nut for the bolt provided with the step, there is one welded on the frame. This is a very nice step, works great and feels sturdy.

Like some of us here, I’m (at 74) not as young as I once was. I’m still recovering from shoulder surgery but I don’t think I’ll have any issues with this project (I’ve a son and two SIL on standby JIC). My main concern is the quality of these lower cost units. I like the AMP unit but the cost is prohibitive. These lower cost units are in my budget range and if they are as good (my RAM is not a work truck, it’s my “fun” truck according to my love wife), then it’ll be good to go. That’s why I’m asking for opinions here from the experts. Thanks
Very expensive and I have a 2018 Ram and none of these cheap ones will fit on it bc of the dual exhaust. The more expensive ones, like the Amp, cost to much. I am probable going to get the metal step that is secured on the trailer hitch. Much cheaper but all I can really afford.
