Bought a truck knowing it probaly needed a new motor. Well it does. My mechenic dosent reccomend just doing cam and lifters based on the amound of metal in the oil. He said the screen was missing?
Been looking at used vs reman, its a scary place to be. Jasper says there like 3 weeks out. Local junk yards are about the same time frame and $2000 less. Not getting alot of confidence with either option .

It will really all come down to “…… How much are you willing to pay?” :waytogo:

Lol yea thats always the case
Even paying all the money for the jasper I still see issues with them. I realize that new or used there can always be issues. Its more like how much do I want to put at risk.

If I were looking I'd focus on remanufactured engins vs. rebuilt or used. I know they cost more. Remans usually get a lot more work done to remove some inherent defects and address other areas not worked on with a simple rebuild.

Warranties and payment plans on reman engines are also available.

How many miles? 4x4?

Well, if time is on your side (which it sounds like it might be), I'd have yer mechanic pull the engine and back the truck outside. Then you and an engine buddy take it apart before deciding on a replacement. It might look pretty good inside, and not real expensive to re-do. Have a machine shop clean the block, go through the heads, and go from there on the rest of the parts. Might not even need to be bored ...depending on miles and what you want to get out of it. Or you have them bore it and buy a rebuild kit. There are other engine guys in your close area I bet who'd love to do a rebuild ...just bc they get a kick out of it ...and whouldn't charge a whole lot. Put the word out.

Another option is ATK ...NAPA/Oreilly/Advance (or Mopar) engines? There are other rebuilders out there.

Time has been on my side.
Ive had this sitting for 2 months since I bought it. My wrench guy was pretty backed up. We were hoping for just a cam lifer deal but he isnt comfortable with what he saw
I am not a mechanic but I sold Dodges for 13 years before changing careers. So I did a lot of hanging out with the techs and have pretty good understanding of systems and parts and the like.

Well the brand new engine for $5500 isn't a bad deal. What was your quote for the Jaspers? QC 4x4 sounds like a pretty decent pickup. You probably didn't want to drop $5.5k into the truck you bought for cheap. But if you were going to keep it a long time ....

With all the problems of the 5.7's, something fresh like you were thinking might make the most sense. If you can find one.

I knew a engine wasnt gonna be cheap but I thought I might get lucky so I took a chance with the realistic thought that replacing the engine was likely. Jasper is just over 6000 if you get all the core money back . Most lower mile used are is the 4 to 5 range and if they get the lifter disease your basically on your own. There seem to be plenty of other options of somewhat lesser known companies that reman but I just dont get the warm fuzzy feeling about them and the money isnt that much less. Id probably take chance on a local junkyard if I found somthing decent that was ready to go and not like a minimum of two weeks out availability
I got the jasper on order they said the 26th of this month I dont have to pay until before they ship

Given everything you mentioned, that's probably a good way to go. Let us know how it goes.

Most of the AUTO PARTS Stores get engines through Evergreen

A friend had a GMC Custom Van Conversion, the van had a very tired engine.
He went to Autozone & ordered an engine through them,
I happened to be home when he asked to borrow my engine hoist & load leveler, & other tools most people don't usually have in their tool kits.

Any way, when the engine came, it was not the correct make, model, or year, i believe it was a Buick or Pontiac & the Starter was on the wrong side & not only that, but that particular engine required Smog Devices, his Van was Smog Exempt as originally built.
There was also some reason Autozone would not willingly take back the Evergreen engine, when it was found out that the engine was not compatible.

They made the engine work & sold the van & they bought my tools back. It was to bad, that he had to go through all of that, it was a nice van conversion

I'm in similar situation... May need to do a cam and lifters, got a $7k total quote from my expensive mechanic...

How long does it take to get engine swapped? And what would it typically cost in a shop?

I’m gonna agree with jeepwalker on this one, if it needs a new engine and your gonna scrap that engine anyways, I’d just tear it down and see what you really have. Even if it is junk, you only wasted some time.

This forum is full of gems. I've never been involved in a rebuild or swap but I was under the impression that reman and rebuild were synonymous. I learned something today, thank you.

Read up on the Jasper engine....
I think what you will find is the $2000 buys you more than just a brand new motor verse a junk yard pull, but that it also includes some upgrades to resolve or minimize any know issues with the factory engine
I know that when I did a transmission in my Ford, that the Jasper offered upgrades to resolve the issue that caused the failure in the 1st place.

My buddy got a Jasper, not the 5.7 for his 2008 Ram. His mechanic noticed a problem with it. Poor compression on #5, they sent it back. Jasper sent another, He had it for a short time, proper breakin and oil changes as spec. Within 6 months, # 5 cylinder had a misfire. Jasper wouldn't work with him. He sold it for 1k. Took the loss.

I see a lot of posts here on buying remanuf. engines or junkyard engines. I rebuilt a 318 V8 in an older Dodge van. It only had 70,000 miles on it but the rings and pistons on the left side of the engine were broken. That was caused by a reflective shield put on the left side on the engine cover to reflect heat away from the drivers leg. It was easy to work on because the engine was further back than the newer vans. I left the block and crankshaft in and worked from the top and under the engine. after removing the pistons, I honed the bores with a tool rented from Autozone. I put new pistons, rings, rod bearings, hydraulic valve lifters in and had a valve job done on the cylinder heads. After I put everything back together, and when I started it, it ran so smooth I couldn't tell that the engine was even running. I had to look and see the fan turning to tell. There was no vibration at all. I think the total cost was less than $700. I drove it about 100,000 miles then sold it. Never had any further problem with it. I had the factory service manual to help me. I also took adult education classes to learn about auto repair at local high schools. Like I said it was easy to work on. I also rebuilt 2 other engines later on. I think that anyone that has some mechanical ability and a garage to work in could do this with the aide of the factory service manual. Those things are worth their weight in gold.
