I recently switched to PUP 5w30 from PUP 5w20, after 2500km of using this weight (in the summer) my findings are that my truck runs sluggish and I can definitely notice a difference in performance (mainly acceleration) seems to work much harder to move the truck, I also found that the temp of the oil runs at least 3-5 degrees C hotter than 5w20, for those reasons ill be switching back to PUP 5w20 sooner than later.
If it wasn't so noticeable I probably wouldn't be posting about it, but wanted to give my feedback on this topic.
While using PUP 5w20 my truck was much more responsive, the oil temp was never higher than 105 degrees C and it didn't feel like it was working as hard to move the vehicle.

During all this I can't comment on anything MDS related in regards to MDS working differently because I always disable MDS as soon as I start driving via +/- on the steering wheel.

My truck is a 2021 classic, I have only run PUP 5w20 since first oil change when I bought it brand new with oil changes done every 6000km (religiously).

Perhaps if and when my truck develops a tick (non manifold related) I can explore different options as seen on the forum from many users.

I was shocked myself (and frustrated) but I can definitely notice something.
I love the idea of running 5w30 for added protection to the motor.

do you have any issue with running 0W in the winter?

No but I don't really park outside much either. I have a heated garage and the parkade at work is heated also.

I ran PUP 5W30 or mixes of varying amounts with 0W40 until the last two oil changes as well, which have been straight PUP 0W40. My truck seemed to like them all.

I am switching to Redline 5W30 next oil change to try that out.

Oh boy, maybe I should just keep running 5w30, not too sure anymore, I just want the best protection and I know 5w20 is not the best.

I doubt you are actually noticing anything (lookup "confirmation bias", it affects us all!). In fact, 5w-20 will be thicker when your engine is cold, than 5w-30 will be when your engine/oil is hot. So unless you're noticing a difference in performance running just 5w-20 cold vs hot, then you can't be noticing a difference running 5w-20 vs 5w-30 at hot temps.

I'd be more inclined to think it's the weather then the oil. Check your local DA /Density Altitude. Higher outdoor temps usually equal ****tier DA,and your truck being naturally aspirated will notice it.You might even have gotten some poor quality fuel to.

I noticed something similar. I switched from royal purple 5w20 to 5w30. Didn’t notice anything different until I switched back to mobil1 5w20. The biggest difference was going into and out of MDS. Much smoother with the 5w20

I have felt a slight power loss also with the heavier oil.
On my wife's mazda 3, it is measurable as you can see the difference in the mpg even between 0w-20 and 5w-20.

The 5w-20 is thinner than the 5w-30 at both 40 deg C and 100 deg. C.
The 0w-40 is significantly thicker than either of the above at those temps.
The 0w-20 is only slightly thinner than the 5w-20 at 40 and the same at 100.

The important viscosities are 100C (212F) and -18C (0F), along with CCS vis @ -35C (for 0W oils).

40C (104F) vis isn't meaningful. Engine oil doesn't see that temp during operation, and isn't relevant to cold starting.

Differences in viscosity of decimal points are meaningless, manufacturers report "typical" values, which turn out to be sloppy averages based on our VOAs. Mine was off from published typical by 15%, but still within the published SAE viscosity grade.

I experienced the same thing with my 2013 Ram switching from 5w20 to 5w30, it felt like it took a littler Pep out of it; so you will feel that especially if your performance driven. I was racing at the time so I was always trying to squeez every last horse out of it, so I switched back to the 5w20. However, after 60k hard miles on that Hemi it was ticking like a time bomb and I eventually dumped it.
Engine oil is application specific, so you have to decide; you want the performance or longevity?
