I was using our 2022 2500 to move 5th wheel around our storage area when I discovered another unwanted / undesireable BIG BROTHER feature . It seems if you have the drivers door open in reverse you cannot backup . The truck just sits there and acts like it's in neutral . Does anybody know of a simple override for this (to me) ridiculous feature ?. Maybe a special fuse or something ? Not likely I am guessing .

This has been a feature for a while. Enacted shortly before the passing of the back up camera law. I personally do not know if a work around.

U can also get a clip like this. I keep something similar in my center console. I plug it in when working like out in a field etc and have to back up, get out numerous times. There are just numerous types, and shapes, etc, U would have to see what U want.

CAVEAT: I AM IN NO WAY PROMOTING THAT YOU OPERATE YOUR VEHICLE ON A PUBLIC HIGHWAY BYPASSING THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM (legal BS, lol)

Cheapest work around is plug the seatbelt in behind you.The seat belt extenders work good though.

Exactly what I do. Never need to do it for long enough to be worth fussing with an extender. The place the extenders work great is off roading as I never wear a seat belt on trails and back roads.

I have the 5 inch extenders in my truck and never remove them, I clip the belt into the extender and when I remove the belt the extender stays in place. Running around in field and farm roadways with no belt on is just get in and go.
When I get on the road I have to think about it and fasten the belt.
When I get in at the house I fasten the belt to the extender, it is actually easier then using the factory latch.
I'm a big boy and reaching the factory latch can be a pain especially in the winter with coveralls and coats on the extender makes it much easier to belt up then.

I know I'm going to get a lot of flack for this and I really don't care. But if you need to open the door to back up a trailer, you have no right hauling the trailer in the first place IMO. Any driving school, or any defensive driving class will tell you the same thing. If you can't back up with your mirrors and by looking over your shoulder you shouldn't be hauling a trailer. End of story

^^^ I'll second this
and I'll go one step further for those of you wanting to throw out "you've been backing up trailers for *** many years" ...welp you've been doing it wrong that long.

As far as needing to open a door to back a trailer I have a hard time arguing with you. That said, many need to open the door so I try to help and not judge. However, like I have written more than once, if you actually work with your truck, there are many situations where you need to be able to drive with the vehicle door open and no seat belt on. I have no interest in explaining why putting out road cones, feeding cattle, loading feed and a whole host of other activities needs this, but if you work a ranch or road work you will know exactly what I am talking about.

There was a time when the owners manual told you how to set the points, adjust the valve lash and set the timing. Now the owners manual tells you not to drink the battery fluid. That is NOT progress, just like all these nanny systems only protect idiots that should have died young anyhow.

Darwin's laws are being severely interfered with. :) :*****:

Lets see you back up onto a set of tire ramps, opening the door is very nice in that situation, beats messing with the mirrors, and then having to reset them when you drive off the ramps, especially if you have manual mirrors.

Hmmm…I can actually do that blindfolded. I just place the ramps directly behind the rear wheels, and simply back up until I feel the truck rock into the ramp cradle.
Does everyone else do it different? Like trying to back up to them from a half block away?

Lets be fair, there are exceptions. Maybe there is a low obstacle on the ground out of the mirrors view, or foliage blocks someone's view, or something like that. Leaning out of the door you can get another perspective that the mirrors cant give you. Yes that's generally an exception but it can happen.

What about backing up while executing some degree of a turn? Trailers don't just go straight back backing onto ramps. Anyone who backs a trailer from a street by turning 90 degrees into a driveway knows this.

Ohhhh, I would probably do….the same thing like I always do- get it to the point where it’s going to go on the ramps, then put them directly behind the tire(s). Pretty simple stuff for me.

Yup i have stuff stored under the wifes Challenger,so everytime it goes inside you're backing up on ramps from along ways away. With my homemade ramp extenders my ramps for the car are close to 5 ft long.

You are not understanding what I said. This is not about ramps. This as about backing a trailer up while executing a turn, like backing into a driveway from the street.

Ahhh, now I got ya. Yeah, there’s never a situation (even one you can dream up) that you should need to open the door when backing any trailer. If so, keep practicing. If you’d rather be able to do whatever it is you need to do that you aren’t capable of with the door closed, then simply plug the seatbelt in, or a seatbelt extender.

There are several current & retired professional truck drivers that are members of this forum.

Very seldom would they open a door to assist with backing up.
Those tanker drivers that deliver fuel to gas stations, have the worst job ever.
confined area, flammable material & worst of all, stupid people that just want to fill up their vehicles.

Even with those huge round mirrors that are attached to the bottom of the regular mirror mounts, they can't see & watch everything.
Sometimes they have to get out of the seat, or even the cab to see the what, who, & where is the next step to get lined up with the tanks & the tank covers.

I have to open my door, to position my Ram exactly in its parking spot.

The city says that no part of my vehicle can be parked on the city sidewalk.
I can't block the sidewalk going into the apartment complex.
I can't block the neighbors parking spot

So i have about a 6 inch square that my front tire must be in
so i have a cement line that my drivers door lines up with, when i am parked correctly

If you notice the cement line with the grass growing in it, one side is my drive way, the other belongs to the City.
The cement line below my rear bumper is the limit line for the beginning of the sidewalk into the complex.

I can't see those cement lines, without opening my door, i am too short to lean my head out through the window
