Almost every time I see a cam thread I reply and say take the oil pump off for timing or it will bite you in the ass! and ppl almost never listen lol. But I hope it works out for you its most likely something stupid/simple there is always something we all do it.
Is there a way to do this without removing the oil pan?

I think someone mentioned a specific offset wrench for the front pan bolts and I thought I saw where the pan gasket is separate in the front of the pan but it could me just dreaming of the perfect engineered engine… most small Hemi’s I’ve worked on that to pull the pump you need to drop the pan and replace the gasket which means to lift the engine up off the mounts.. but maybe you’ll find another way ?

My original intention was to inject some humor into your thread by asking if you cleaned the lens cover.

I just do not see a way to do it and be 100% sure timing is correct with out pulling oil pump cause you cant even pull chain guide with pump on and without that slack you would not have enough of slack with just the tensioner alone to slip the chain on crank gear but even if that was true and could be done you have no way to see if that mark is lined up. I know its a pita to drop oil pan for that one bolt in pick up tube its a **** design but timing and the risk of doing it again spend the time now make sure its right so you do not have to do it again.

Yes you can do it without 100% removing the pan loosen the rear pan bolts remove all front bolts let the front of pan drop down a little and you will be able to get the oil pump pickup tube bolt out of the oil pump this is how I do it works every time.

Yes as stated above I should have cleared that up already yes pan just has to be lowered enough to get pick up tube bolt out no need for it to come all the way out

What size is the pickup tube bolt? Looking at some different offset style wrenches.

13mm all I did was get a regular cheap craftsman or any make wrench heat it with the torch stick it in the vice and give it a slight bend.

Do I need to tie the pickup tube or anything to keep it in place or is it rigid?

Mine was not quite at 6-oclock on crank.......more like 5:45........all timing components were new........phaser, sprockets, tensioners, & chain

it's rigid and bolted in place again elsewhere

make sure you loosen the pan bolts enough to drop it down to get the clearance you need, don't loosen just the front bolts and try to bend it down, you'll never get it to seal back up... ask me how i know

when it's time to put the pump back on, you can zip tie around the threads of the tube bolt to keep it from dropping into the pan when you're trying to thread it back in

mine sounded clickety clackety when i started it the first time too. my timing and rods were good but i didn't soak the lifters. i wound up squirting oil into the lifter bores w/ a turkey baster. it was quiet after that. whether it helped or not i dont know lol.

my mmx NTR cam idles smooth

I would check your VVT(VCT) Valve under intake first. Make sure connector is plugged up good and and sure no pins pushed out off to side if that checks out pull it and check it for damage like in video thats a starting point cause it will throw both of them codes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05OGucfsudI&t=173s

it's rigid and bolted in place again elsewhere

I remember when pulling my timing cover I didnt know about the bolts from oil pan to timing cover and thankfully i realized it before causing any damage lol

Instead of using a ziptie on the bolt ,wrap several wraps of dental floss around the bolt, hold the bolt in place with a modded buttar knife or something similiar if you can't get your finger on the bolt head, then pull on the dental floss to start the bolt and turn it in a few threads. Wrap the dental floss so when you pull on it,it turns the bolt righty tighty

I may have missed it but, what did your failed cam and lifters look like? Was a lobe missing? If so, how long was it driven with the tick?

Unfortunately, fixing your problem is going to take more than a few hours but well worth it to do it right. Since you've already test-driven it, I would pull the valve covers and do a leak-down test. This would be my first step because you can't do it after pulling the heads and it's a PIA checking for bent valves after the heads are off. This would indicate a bent valve or push rod (the result of bad timing). If you're semi-lucky in this step, you find a bent push rod and know it's because of bad timing.

2nd would be to pull the timing cover off to verify timing. You can use a small surgical (flexible head) mirror to get a peak in there or the video camera on a phone to see the mark (record a video since your head can't get in there). If the timing is good go to step 3.

3rd is to pull the heads and ensure that the lifters were installed in the correct bores (the directions can be very confusing at times). If you're on step 3 and find that you installed them incorrectly, you're lucky. Just relocate them to the correct bores.

Hopefully, you find the culprit before step 4 because now you've likely got a catastrophic problem in your engine.
4th is to verify your lifters are good, which they probably are since you said it sounds like a sewing machine and they seldom fail. BTW: I've performed these steps about 4-6 times over the past 9 months. Hope I haven't missed a step.
