hey guys im new here and and probably not doing this forum thing right its my first time posting here. but i searched this forum like crazy before i jumped in .any way i took on a new project that i could use some help with. its a 2013 ram hemi 4x4 got it for a steal. bad cam and lifter. worked on stuff my entire life but this is my first hemi to dig into. anyways i get engine tore down heads off and timing cover off no big deal. i get to removal of camshaft and take my time setting my marks up before removal. number 1 at TDC my crank keyway at 2 o clock. my phaser marks at 12. i marked my chain and phaser and never moved the crank. i get old cam out and new cam in lined everything up install tensioner and remove allen key holding tensioner in slack comes out and marks are just like before. i rotated it a couple times and everything lines up. anyways get it all back together and starts good. runs good, sounds good, no codes. cool. well after it warms up and on immediate restart the starter drags and it pings before firing off. pretty sure im a tooth off but with no codes? and is it in my marks or can a phaser be stuck? any other ideas like that involves me not removing timing cover? any input will be super appreciated. oh and also put in a brand new battery hoping id get lucky. nope.

Check cam sensor or the cam phaser.

Assuming the engine is timed. VCT system is where I would look. I'm guessing within 50 miles that CEL will pop on.

You should be looking if you plugged in the phaser actuator. "VVT solenoids"

Sorry the hemi stuff is new to me. Are you calling the actuator what I think is the cam sensor? On the top left of timing cover?

You could also pull out one set of plugs and wires from the other set and just crank it and listen, just for peace of mind.

ok i found the phaser actuator under the intake with the intake still on and it looks to be plugged in. i dont think i even messed with that anyway. i cant see all the other solenoids tho so may need to remove intake to check them. i removed my timing cover to double check my timing and am pretty certain its correct. used a welding rod in cylinder one and right before it starts to drop my cam phaser is showing 12 oclock and my crank keyway is facing 2. i dont have the marking on my oil pump that alot of people go by. i guess theres a chance i mixed a mds lifter and a non mds lifter? what would a symptom of that be?

yea thats what i was trying to avoid. I pulled the valve covers and spun it over and all the rockers move so idk. its just so strange its almost like its trying to hydro lock on me on a hot restart. i pulled intake and left fuel line on it and powered it up and had no injector leaking. number 7 intake port looked way cleaner than the others, but that was my bad cylinder before. it doesnt matter which way that lifter goes in a cylinder does it? like i couldnt turn the lifter backwards right? theres not a front and back side on a lifter?

Well for me, if it was my build with some of the questions you had asked it seems like you know where the problem is..... you just don't want to do it. Let me bang out some more magical keyboard powers for other areas of opportunity. 200.gif

Jk take the heads back off and get it done.
